IBM (International Business Machines) was formed from a merger of three companies on June 16, 1911. Those companies were; Tabulating Machine Company (D.C. Based), the International Time Recording Company (Endicott), and Computing Tabulating Recording company (CTR). This merger was financed by Charles Flint. Who would run the now called CTR until 1914.

In 1914 Flint hired Thomas J. Watson I to lead the new company. In 1924 Watson changed the name of C-T-R to the International Business Machines company (IBM) because he felt CTR was not sufficient to the vision of the company. It was Watson who institutded many of the corporate structure and programs which IBM is best known for today.

The IBM 701, their first computer available for sale, had 36 bits per word. This word size was used on all their 700 and 7000 series binary scientific computers.

The first IBM 702 had two 512 character accumulators.

Originally called Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (C-T-R), they changed their name to International Business Machines Corporation in 1924.

After Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen made Microsoft, they wanted to goet it out there, so they told IBM about it who then wanted to see it. So, IBM took it and discussed it, not reaching a licensing agreement, but that Microsoft had to get a good operating system. Gates got 86-DOS, which is similar to CP/M and which Tim Paterson had made for hardware like a computer. Microsoft made a deal with them that he would be exclusive licensing agent, and later on become the full owner, of the operating system 86-DOS. Gates then insisted that IBM let Microsoft keep the copyright on 86-DOS, because other vendures werre believed to eventually clone IBM's system.

Bill did his schooling from Lakeside private school. Bills love for computers and math led him to a new place around his neighborhood that was renting computer time. He got an arrangement with the owners that he would get free computer time if he found things that would make the computer crash. During this time Bill met Paul Allen his business partner for the rest of his life. Together they started a small company called Traf-O-Data, they sold a small computer outfitted with their program that could count traffic for the city. This company wasn't a big success but it did earn the two boys some money as well as good business skills. Bill also wrote a schedule program for his school which he modified a bit to put little Bill Gates in a class full of the prettiest girls in the school. In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft's chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.

In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen.
