Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the creation and management of systems that integrate people and materials and energy in productive ways. An industrial engineer studies industrial productivity and makes and implements recommended changes.

What is the difference between mild steel and galvanised steel?

The difference is percentage of carbon, the main alloy element. Those irons containing less than 2% carbon are known as steels while those containing more than 2% carbon are known as pig iron. Pig iron is obtained from iron ore by processing it with coke in a blast furnace. This pig iron is then further processed to reduce the carbon content in different furnaces to obtain steels. These steels can be then further processed to obtain alloy steels, stainless steels by adding elements such as silicon, manganese, chromium, nickel, etc.

How do you distinguish high speed steel from carbon steel?

Carbon steels are designated by 4 number referring to the manganese and carbon content (e.g. 1018, 4140, 1095) High speed steel use a letter and number configuration for their designation. The high speed steels designations begin with one of two letters either an M for Molybdenum type or T for Tungsten type high speed steels. ( e.g. M-2, M-4, M-48 or T-1, T-15)

Operating system as resource manager?

This is an alternate view about the services performed by the OS. The OS system provides an orderly and controlled allocation of the processors, memories and I/O devices. When a computer has multiple users the need for managing and protecting the memory, I/O devices and other devices is greater. Thus the primary task of OS is to keep track of who is using which resource, to grant resource requests, to mediate conflicting requests from different programs etc. Resource management includes multiplexing resources in two ways - "in time" and "in space". (i)When a resource is time multiplexed different programs or different users gets their turn to use that resource. eg: Printer. (ii)When a resource is space multiplexed instead of taking turns, the resource is shared among them, ie each one gets a part of the resource. eg: Sharing main memory, hard disk etc.

How to Design of Inertia block?

The following is taking from the 'Outline Answers' of Part (A) of the 2009 Noise and Vibration Control Engineering paper from an examination as part of the Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control which is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics.

"Inertia blocks are massive supports used for isolating foundations beneath vibration-sources and/or vibration-sensitive machines. Inertia blocks increase the isolated mass and therefore decrease the natural frequency of the vibrating system; particularly useful for dealing with very low frequency vibration problems, e.g. isolating a recording studio from an underground railway."

It is generally considered that the equipment should be rigidly mounted to the inertia block, a view also taken by Bies and Hansen (2009). The inertia block should also be made of rigid material such as concrete.

What is a foundry ladle made of?

Foundry ladles usually comprise of a mild steel shell with a refractory lining material. Effectively it is the refractory lining material that allows the foundry ladle to be used with molten metal whilst the steel shell provides support for the refractory. Traditionally the refractory material used to be firebrick, fireclay or even rammed sand. However it is more common for foundries to now use special refractory concretes that have high insulation values and last longer. Examples can be seen at www.acetarc.co.uk Where small amounts of metal are to be cast foundries will sometimes use ceramic crucibles to hold the metal.

What is cadet engineer?

A cadet engineer is an engineer in training. They are in the process of receiving training in the different areas of engineering. They assist various departments with civil works. They are usually in the process of receiving a bachelors degree in engineering.

What is a gap bed lathe?

The bed of a lathe is the central beam that runs down the machine. The head, which holds and turns the workpiece, is fixed at one end, there is a tailstock at the other end which can be adjusted along the bed, and usually a carraige in between, which holds turning tools. The workpiece that can be turned in the lathe is limited to what will fit in the head without hitting the bed. A gap bed lathe has a gap in the bed near the head, so a larger workpiece can be turned.

What is the peak voltage of a 240 VRMS sine wave?

To calculate the peak voltage of an RMS voltage in a sine wave simply multiply the RMS voltage with the square root of 2 (aprox. 1,414) like this:

240 x 1,414 = 339,4 V

RMS x sqr.root of 2 = peak voltage

What is the construction procedure of bored cast-in-situ concrete pile using rotary rigs?

Shift and set the rig at the location of pile alredy surveyed. complete the boring to the required depth by attaching the boring assemblies with the rig. Flush the bore hole with bentonite solution. remove the boring assembly and insert the pre fabricated reinforcement cage. laping should be welded. set the reqiured length of tremmi pipe (dia not less than 200mm) and do flushing with new bentonite solution having density not more than 1.12. continue the flushing for atleast 30 minutes and check the density of liquid over flowing from the bore hole. if the density of it is 1.12 stop the flushing and pore the concrete stage by stage upto the cut off level.

thank you

What is the role of an industrial engineer in facilities planning and design?

Industrial engineers can estimate the time taken and the process for manufacture. This will help you estimate the type and number of machines required to manufacture your product.

What is the desirable mechanical properties for a wire coat hanger?

A wire coat-hanger has no mechanical properties, as it comprises no moving parts, other than the atoms that form the metal from which it is made. Ideally, a wire coat-hanger would be stiff so as to withstand the weight of the coat (or article) hung from it without bending or becoming mishapen. It would also be diminutive in weight and size, in order to transport and store it easily.

What is cryogenic deflashing?

Cryogenic deflashing is a form of deflashing used to remove any excess plastic from parts that are molded. As molds wear and age they develop places where flash can occur. Typical areas for flash are along the part including parting lines and edges. Flash can be removed using various deflashing methods.

Cryogenic deflashing utilizes batch processing to remove flash from parts. If thousands of parts are molded at a time and exhibit flash, then they can be processed quite quickly. Parts are processed in a cryogenic deflashing machine that lowers temperatures and shoots media. The lower temperatures allow the flash to freeze and become heavy. Then media is shot at the parts which takes off the flash. Normal cycles are less than 30 minutes.

Cryogenic deflashing offers repeatable results again and again. The surface of the parts are not destroyed or discolored. The only thing that is removed is the flash. Cryogenic deflashing is great for rubber, silicone, various plastics, and some metals. It is also is a cheaper process due to its speed of execution and lot sizes. I have been working with cryogenic deflashing equipment for several years and I can say that they are one of the most cost-effective ways to deflash any part.

Why killd carbon steel is used for low temperature service?

In short

Killed or fully killed steel (steels are also produced as semi killed steel) normally uses Si & Al for completely stopping (killing) the reaction between carbon and oxygen in molten steel.

1. Addition of small amount of Al helps in refining the grain size which in turn increases toughness of steel, an important requirement for steel against low temperature brittleness.

2. Killed steel is also comparatively cleaner (freedom from inclusions, stringers, etc) and therefore have better properties.

What is non fusion welding and types?

non fusion welding is when there is no filler metal needed...Actually all welding is considered fusion welding, meaning the material fuses together unlike soldering. The material has to melt to fuse.
