If you travel west across the International Dateline, then before you reach

your destination and interact with other people who haven't traveled along

with you, you need to tear an extra day off of your calendar, and crank your

wristwatch ahead to 24 hours later.

The International Date Line is the imaginary line opposite the Prime Meridian that does not currently run through any nation. It is located opposite the Prime Meridian at 180 degrees longitude and serves as the transition line for changing calendar days.

When crossing the line from west to east, you take the last page

that you tore off of your calendar, and you glue it back on.

If you used a sextant and a marine chronometer you could determine your position and plot this on a map using latitude and longitude. If you did this regularly you would be able to plot your course.

The International Date Line runs primarily along the 180 degree longitudinal line. The Equator runs along 0 degrees latitude. The lines intersect along in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (0 degrees North, 180 degrees West).

When you are traveling eastward and you cross the International Dateline, then
you reach into the trash bag, pull out the last day that you tore off of your calendar,
and you glue it back on.

Also, as soon as you find it convenient, you turn the date on calendar wrist-watch BACK
to one number less than the date showing on its face.

The effect is that you get the past 24 hours to live all over again.

The line that cuts a parallel line is called a TRANSVERSAL. When you have parallel lines and you want to show like corresponding, vertical, ect....

then the line that cut through the parallel lines is a TRANSVERSAL
