I would say that any joint of the body can reach a point when it can get very painful indeed. And this is usually just before a replacement is considered. It is difficult to appreciate how debilitating and painful a joint can get until after it has been replaced if that was the only way to fix it. I for instance had an elbow replaced and never fully understood just how painful it was until after I was able to start using it properly again. So I would say it depends largely on each individual situation.

The cost of knee, hip and ankle replacement surgeries usually include only the procedure and the hospitalization. The prosthesis is paid by a patient separately. Rehabilitation period after the surgery is also extra charged. But there are clinics which provide the packages for knee, hip and ankle replacements. Ball joints can be a very time consuming affair, but is a required maintenance item for most trucks. The first step is usually removing the steering knuckle. This process is different for various vehicles. To do this you must remove the wheel. Remove the outer tie rod for the steering. Detach brake caliper from knuckle, and set aside. Remove brake rotor. Remove the ball joint retaining nuts. remove or disconnect the axle if 4wd is applicable. Remove the steering knuckle. On most fords the upper ball joint is replaced as one piece with the upper control arm mounted on the frame by two bolts. This may be different on the larger trucks. The lower ball joint should be pressed out and in with a ball joint press (Which can be very expensive.) When finished with ball joints an alignment is needed on many vehicles. That is just a real quick list of things to do on most ball joint jobs. I hope it is helpful.

Ball Joint Replacement: I used the rental tool to press out the old ball joint and press in the new one. When pressing out the old ball joint the key is to properly set up the press, tighten the screw on the press, then give the screw a few good solid blows to shock the old ball joint. Once I did this the old ball joint pressed out almost effortlessly. Installation of the new ball joint was a breeze. The only comment is be extremely careful not to damage the axle boot seals. Have wire on hand to tie the spindle assembly and axle for support to prevent damage to the brake hoses and ABS system.
