I assume you are referring to a manual transmission. Grinding while changing gears is an indication of a synchronizer going bad. Until you get it fixed, try double clutching when shifting.

Ford calls for 5w30 oil in the Mark VIII. I have had four of these Mark VIII's, a 1994, a 1996, a 1998 and currently a 1997. I have used 5w 30 in all of them, not synthetic, changed it every 3,000 miles (every month for me) and have never had any kind of oil related problem with any of these cars. The 1996 had almost 400,000 miles on it before it was stolen and demolished!
The Mark 8 uses O-rings to seal diffrent areas along the tubing to the air-shocks and pump. I believe there are 2 or 3 difrfrent sizes of rings used, and can be replaced. Take the rigs out and match them up at a place that sells the O-rigs.
