How do you install an air filter on a 2003 Navigator?
1. Remove the flat plastic cover from the top of the engine by removing the two bolts and pulling up. There is a hidden friction support on the left side of the enginge when viewed from the front. 2. Loosen the hose clamp around the air intake at the engine. 3. Loosed the hose clamp at the outlet of the air filter assembly. 4. Remove the hose assembly that connects the air filter assembly to the engine air intake. 5. Undo the spring clamp that hold the two halves of the air filter assembly together and loosen the clamp ring. IMPORTANT: Note where the clamp lever is in relation to the line up tab at the top of the filter housing. 6. Pull the front of the air assembly away from the rest of the filter housing. Note where the clamp ring fits over the plastic tabs at the bottom of the removed housing half. IMPORTANT: Becareful when removing the front of the housing as there is a wiring harness that is connected to an air mass sensor in the housing. I did not need to disconnect the wiring harness as I was able to move the loose part toward the firewall. 7. You are now able to access the filter to replace it. 8. Reverse these disassembly steps to everything back together properly.

Make sure you haven't pulled a hose loose at the back. Wrestling the top cover off the filter might pull one off the back behind the cover. They easily slip back on if you do.

It is the square black box that is at the end of the large rubber tube that comes from the intake manifold on top of the engine. There are actually (4) O2 sensors on your truck. If you look inside the wheel wells behind the fender liner, right about where the frame is one O2 sensor, the other is underneath the truck about half way back in relation to the transmission. If you see where the exhaust joints together, you went about 6" too far.
When you start looking at the O2 sensors, they are normally numbered something like "Bank 1 Sensor 1" Bank 1 is on the passenger side; Bank 2 is on the driver's side. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor (near the frame, between the block and the cat) and Sensor 2 is near the Y-pipe (downstream of the cat).
Normally it is the upstream sensors (sensor 1) that go first. They see the harshest conditions.
