Entertainment, teaching yourself things, broadening your horizons, studying, etc, etc
This is a good question, as reading books has become increasingly obsolete in a world of "instant gratification" media. Why read the book when you can watch the movie?.....Well the answer is this--if you train your mind to read by actually doing "real" reading instead of just texts and T.V. guide--eventually you will reach a point (sooner than you think) where your IMAGINATION becomes STRONG. Strong enough to think you out of tight corners, and strong enough to actually SEE what is taking place in the book--in your mind. Your vocabulary will grow; and since being able to more accurately express yourself can be equated to both intelligence and potential for success; it will aid you in all areas of your life, from your love life (write a poem and shes yours) to your career potential (assuming, of course that like 98% of people you could use more money). Plus after your mind is trained; its actually quite enjoyable to read a "good" book (make sure you read something that INTERESTS you or its pointless), and BELIEVE me; I tell you no lies when I say THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE(every.single.time.)

Why is speaking more difficult than writing?
There's no initially obvious reason why the act of writing has to be more difficult than speaking--both use similar language skills and devices, and most people can master the coordination required to write or type with little difficulty. However, the absence of nonverbal cues in written speech combined with the general lack of interaction found in written communication probably makes written speech less efficient or intuitive at communicating ideas than spoken speech--and this is perceived as a difference in difficulty.
Most speaking relies heavily on differences of intonation and volume to stress important concepts and hint at logical organization of ideas; for example, many speakers use rising intonation to stress introduction of a new idea and parallel intonation (pronouncing different sentences with the same pattern of tones) to communicate similarity of concepts. These cues enable the organization/progression of even complicated ideas to be followed by the listener. Written speech, lacking these cues, must "overcompensate" with more obvious organization or parallel structure to communicate similar content.

What is an authoritative dictionary?
An authoritative dictionary is one where a group of people all agree is a competent dictionary. That is an oversimplification, but there it is. Two grammarians with sixty years of combined experience can give an expert opinion on what a good dictionary is, but it takes more than that to label something as authoritative. Which ones are considered authoritative? Oxford is a big one. American Heritage and Merriam-Webster are a couple more. I prefer American Heritage because the layout is easier to read. It is also important to know what isn't authoritative. Beware of Webster dictionaries. They are a take-off on the Merriam-Webster dictionaries. Compare Snap-On (a professional tool supply company) to Stack-On (a second-rate tool supply company). Some companies try to benefit from the reputation of other companies by using a play-on-words. Don't be fooled. Although Webster's version is good, it is not considered authoritative. There are encyclopedic dictionaries, unabridged dictionaries, and several other kinds, with many of them being quite good. Encyclopedic dictionaries are cool, but when a dictionary tries to do more than simply be a dictionary, the quality suffers. Using a combined dictionary is like trying to surf the 'Net on your phone; it can be done, but it pales in comparison with a T3 line on a full size computer.
