How do you change a pre-911 Ricardo combination lock?
To change a pre-911 Ricardo combination lock, first, open the lock using the current combination. Once unlocked, locate the small reset lever or button, usually found on the side or back of the lock. Move the lever to the 'reset' position, then enter your new combination. Finally, return the lever to its original position and test the new combination to ensure it works properly.
What are door knobs and locks and hings made of?
Much residential door hardware is made of brass. However, depending on the quality of the hardware more brass or less brass is used. High quality hardware (for example Baldwin Hardware or Hager Hinge) is made of heavy gauge (thickness) tarnish & scratch resistant brass. Lower quality hardware (for example Kwikset and store branded hardware) is made of thin gauge (thickness) brass. Sometimes lower quality hardware is brass clad steel or brass plated steel.
How can I obtain a key for a locked drawer?
Hopefully, you can see the numbers that are on the lock itself. Take those to a locksmith and often they will have the key. This is most usually true for office type filing cabinets.
How does an exterior door handle lock work?
An exterior door is usually a keyed doorknob or keyed lever. It may consist of single or multiple bolts to lock the door.
The best and most effective way to open a padlock is by using the correct key or combination. There are however a variety of other ways to open a padlock. Since padlocks are designed to keep personal property secure then clearly manufacturers are always coming up with new ways to make it difficult to open them unofficially. This has created an ongoing challenge to many people across the globe in creating new ways to pick padlocks.
There a few common methods of open padlocks unofficially:
PickingPicking a padlock is not common in criminal activities since it requires a great deal of skill and time to learn. It is however used by many lock-smiths to open a padlock without having to damage it. Lock pick sets are readily available on the market and consist of a variety of picks and torque wrenches. The torque wrench is placed into the locking cylinder first and a tiny amount of pressure is use to turn the barrel. The pick is the used to stroke the pins within the cylinder. The key to picking a padlock is to use apply just the correct amount of pressure on the torque wrench rather than the technique or movement of the actual pick. This is where most people go wrong. If the correct amount of pressure is used then the tiny imperfections in the pins will cause each one to jump into alignment before the other. A few strokes will cause all the pins to align and open the padlock.
Bump KeysMany cheaper padlocks do not use as many pins or might not be made as precisely in the factory. As a result they can sometimes be opened using a bump key. These are like normal keys but have uniform grooves.Image: http://www.nothingbutpadlocks.com/images/locks/bump_key.jpg
The key can be forced into the locking cylinder with force or a quick "bump" which can cause the pins to be aligned correctly. There is a small amount of skill required but much less than picking a lock in the above method.
Shackle ShimsThe U-shape or shackle of the padlock is locked into the body using small spring loaded bolts. Once again in cheaper models of padlock there can be a tiny gap where the shackle enters the body. A shackle shim is a very thin piece of metal such as the tin used on a can of coke and this can sometimes be used to slide down the side of the shackle and into the body of the lock. If pushed deep enough it can push open the locking bolts used to secure the lock. Combination padlocksCombination padlocks use ball bearings in their mechanism to determine when the correct combination is used. However, as these bearings align correctly you can sometimes feel resistance when pulling on the shackle. This can indicate that the number is correct or at least exactly 5 away from the correct number if the bearings are designed to align on the other side of the padlock. This method does not always work since many better quality combination padlocks have overcome the problem with more precise manufacturing techniques.

How do you open your samsonite luggage if you have lost the code?
AMAZING!. it works!
a magnifying glass held steady to the Right of the tumbler helps. and a desk lamp so you don't have to hold a flash light too.
000 is the default... but if the lock gets "accidentally" changed here is what you do...
AnswerTo RESET THE COMBO:
If that doesn't work for you, you might as well get a new set of luggage. (I know, sad, but true) I would suggest going for a discounted set since luggage can get really expensive. And this time try remembering the combo.

Follow-up:
I was able to open my suitcase using the answer above. Here are a couple of tips:
The little hole or divot in the shaft was to the right of the wheel and hidden unless one pushes the wheel to the left while turning it. When all the shaft holes are lined up the lock would open by pushing the release mechanism tabs on either side of the lock.
Note that the release mechanism does not open by squeezing the center latch tabs together or pushing them apart. Instead one must move BOTH together to the right and the word OPEN will appear.

How do you unjam a car trunk lock?
I had a problem of the trunk not staying close when shut. it was because for some reason the bracket on the bottom side was not seated properly although there were no visible dents or bending. At first i replaced the opening mechanism with one from a junk yard, and that did not work. In the end all that was needed was to change the angle of the bracket on the bottom, to do this.
Loosen the to hex bolts on the bracket
On the bottom side of the bracket put something ~1/8" thick between the bracket and the body of the car ( I used a thick zip tie because it is easy to slide in).
re-tighten bolts.
If it still does not close try using something thicker.

How do you unlock a sterling suitcase with forgotten combination lock?
Combination locks on suitcases are seldom more than 4 numbers long. It is therefore possible to crack them by simply trying every number between 0000 and 9999. Start at one need ans simply work to the other, at some point you will hit the correct combination - it just take a little time.

How do you open a locked Samsonite suitcase?
I would like to add another way that just worked for me. 1. Position the suitcase as listed below. You need to look at the spindles of the wheels. 2. Shine a torch at the black wheels, so that you can see underneath the wheels. 3. Now turn the dials one notch at a time. When you see a metal spring, that's the magic number. Repeat for all dials. 4. You can see the notch, look for the spring, the other notches will just look black or plastic. Good luck Full credit to the previous post as it got me looking under the wheels.
This happened to me. I called Samsonite and this is what they sent me and it worked.
The following are the lock picking instructions you requested from Samsonite Consumer Relations.
1. Position the luggage so that the numbers on the wheel are
right-side-up as they face you and set all three wheels to "0".
2. Starting with the wheel on the left, to the right of the wheel,
look into the narrow space between the right side of the wheel and
the body of the lock. Look down into the shaft. (If you have a
safety pin, straight pin, or thin nail file, place that in the
narrow space.)
3. While looking down into the shaft, rotate the wheel slowly. You
are looking for an indentation (a square notch). When you find
the indentation, stop and write the number down. (If you are using
a tool, the tool will fall into the indentation.)
4. Follow the process for the remaining two wheels.
5. Try to open the piece of luggage.
6. If the luggage still will not open, please try the following:
a) If the number on the wheel is over 5, subtract 5 from the
number showing. For example, if the number showing is 8 turn
the wheel to 3 because 8-5=3.
b) If the number is under 5, add 5 to the number showing. For
example if the number showing is 2 turn the wheel to 7
because 2+5=7. The numbers showing on the wheels will be
your combination.

How do you get the combination to an old combination lock?
Trial and error.
Start at 00001 and work your way around.
You could probably do it while watching television over a period of time, do a bit every night.
******
That would work, but it would take a while and is does not use much style!
Here is a better way: If it is a lock that the user sets the combination, they frequently use a number that they will not forget.
So try :
Birthdays
Boyfriend/Girlfriend/husband/Wife birthday
last 4 of SSN
first 4 of SSN
address
zip code
Phone number
etc.
And try them different ways, for example 04/09/65 could be 0409 or 4965 or 0965.
You get the idea. This can cut the number of possibles to a couple of dozen.
