He later turned to crime and was sentenced to ten years in prison. While there he was converted to Islam. When he got out of prison he started preaching to people about Islam. His real name was Malcolm Little but he changed it to Malcolm X. He did this because he believed that Little was not his real name but passed down by his ancestors when they were brought to America and were forced to be slaves. So in changing his last name to X it was a sign for unknown.
