Why did Malcolm Little changed his name to Malcolm X?

Malcolm X - originally Malcolm Little when he was born in 1925 - changed his name in 1952 after he moved to Chicago. The reason driving his change of name was the fact that he joined the Nation of Islam. African American followers of Mohammed knew that their family names were not their true last names, but a name that had been given to their ancestors when they were shipped as slaves to America - the custom at that time was for white slave owners to give their own last name to their slaves as a sign of ownership. Therefore, Islamist African Americans changed their last names to 'X' as a sign that they repudiated the actions of the former slave owners, and as a mark for 'unknown' since their real family name was not recorded. Later in his life, Malcolm earned the Muslim name El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, after the required hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca.

What impact on society did the flying shuttle have?

The Flying Shuttle was made by an English inventor named John Kay in 1733. It was used for making weaving much faster. Allowing people to make larger looms operated by one person, Using levers and springs to pull the shuttle back. The Flying Shuttle became a very important invention in the textile industry, eventually put one or two shuttle throwers out of a job. The Flying Shuttle did use a lot of yarn and did make the supply of yarn even worse. The invention could produce a large piece of cloth; the invention was thrown by a leaver that could be operated by one weaver. Kay placed shuttle boxes at each side of the loom connected by a long board, known as a shuttle race. A single weaver, using one hand, could cause the shuttle to be moved back and forth across the loom from one shuttle box to the other. Some woollen manufacturers used the Flying Shuttle but did not pay him royalties. Many people from the textile industry were of course very offended and attacked John Kay home and destroyed his invention, because they thought "The Flying Shuttle" was such a successful invention it would have taken work away from them. Many people have tried creating well duplicating his invention but have not really succeeded. Inventions of the revolution in textiles were weaving and spinning while the Flying Shuttle had the scene of mechanical weaving; the spinning frame was also important making the textile industry. John Kay's invention had lead the industrial revolution. Without his Flying Shuttle, there would have been no need for the spinning machines that followed, Like the Spinning Jenny for instance.

What is advertising in contemporary society?

Information has never been more important, and never so completely and readily available to everyone. There is a place for responsible advertising, but the truth is that advertising can strongly and powerfully influence an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Brilliant ad men can tell a nation what is current, desirable and indispensible. They can help indoctrinate the masses into believing that certain positions are preferable to other positions. What will happen when these ad men connect with politicians? As it is, the Supreme Court has cleared the way for Big Business to spend any amount of money they want in order to influence the general public on political matters and the election of public officials. We have become a nation of Big Business, and not of the People. And advertising is the national anthem that we will all be singing. Again, nothing wrong with advertising. But if we don't want to [continue to be] led through the nose, we had better wake up.
