It depends on why you are taking leave, and if you have short term disability coverage in force. Short term disability will cover your disability, but will not pay benefits if you are taking leave to care for a family member.
How accurately can an ultrasound determine the date of conception?
Ultrasounds measure the size of the fetus to predict a due date and are usually very accurate, within two weeks, so I would safely assume that it would not be off by five weeks. You can ask your doctor, it won't be the first time he or she has answered that question,I promise.
Also it depends on when the U/S is. U/S before 12 weeks of pregnancy are very accurate, plus or minus 2 weeks. After that there are more varibles, babies grow at different rates so they are not as accurate.
Can you switch from work comp to short term disability?
Usually not, unless you can prove your injury did not happen at work and having it listed as such was an error (made by someone other than you).
I know being injured is the worst, dealing with people who want to give their 2 cents worth about your medical care is the pits, but if you have to be injured there are worse things than WC. Not suggesting you (or anyone) should take advantage - just think you should know what you are entitled to. Because WC only pays for these things if you know they are supposed to. (Check out what the particulars are for the state you live in.)
Assuming an injury occurred at/or was caused by - work
+ WC vs STD the benefits to WC :
+ WC payments do not have to be claimed on your taxes - (STD is taxed)
+ Receive WC and state benefits if you are taking a hit on take home pay - the amount you receive by WC subtracted from what you are entitled to on STD - STD makes up the difference.
+Your ability to see a doctor is guaranteed: If you don't like the doctor WC sends you to, you
have the right to a second opinion and after 30 days the right to see a doctor of your choice.
+WC pays for many services that most standard insurances won't (like acupuncture - massage - psych care - without deductibles or arbitrary limits - hospital care 100%)
+WC doesn't stop paying after x amount of time just because x amount of time passed.
+WC pays pharmacy - including OTC - if your doc orders it.
+WC pays for other services or equipment (durable medical) that STD won't cover.
+WC pays gas mileage.
+WC will retrain you if you are unable to return to U&C employment.
NOT ONLY BAD QUESTION but ILLOGICAL - first you collect INSURANCE Benefits - not PAY (this money comes from insurance policy that you and/or employer pay into) - - You don't return any "insurance benefits" from anybody - unless they can prove your disability a fake. I'm guessing your short term disability is a personal health issue - and you're ready to go back to work, except you don't want to work for your old employer. If you want to get a new job - don't mention your short term disability to new employer. If new employer looks like they want to confer w/old employer - just cop a plea - like working for them made you sick! and now you realize that you need a different employer cause you Love what you do, and you want to work for someone who appreciates you! Well I could go on forever - but insurance proceeds are not PAY - and if they were you would have to pay income tax on them - so go ask IRS agent about your liability for next years income taxes. Best way to check that is to look at checks you getting from Insurance company - if pay - they're taking out FED/State income taxes.
Being pregnant is not a short term disability issue and definitely was not caused by a work place incident.

Are you required to pay for health insurance while on short term disability?
That depends upon whether you are covered under FMLA, and the percentage of premium paid by your employer.
If you are covered under FMLA, then your employer is required to continue coverage on the same basis as before your leave. For example if your employer was paying half the premium and you were paying half the premium, this arrangement would continue while you are on leave. You would be responsible for continuing these payments. If your employer pays 100% of the premium you would have no payments to make.
If you are not covered under FMLA your employer is free to ask you to pay 100% of the premium.
