British and Australian troops were sent to Gallipolli in 1915 in order to capture the dardinelles straight - knocking turkey out of the war and putting pressure on Germany. The reason it was so important to Russia was because the purpose of gaining the dardinelles straight was to gain access for ships to send suplies to russia. It is probably not as important today since much international cargo travels by air, but when almost everything was shipped by sea, the ports on the Black Sea were Russia's only access to the open ocean that would not be blocked ice in the winter.

Orlando Figes, an English historian and the auther of the book "The Crimean War - a History", says that Greek Traders preferred shipments of English manufactured goods to the Persian Gulf and India in the 1840's to go by way of the Mediterreanian Sea, through the Bosphorus to the Black Sea, to the port of Trebizond on the Southern shore in Anatolia, Turkey (Ottoman Empire) and from there down the Euphrates to the Persian Gulf. This was to avoid the Suez Canal's high winds and Monsoons and avoid the ruler of Egypt, Mehmet Ali, a French Ally. The connection between Trebizond and the headwaters of the Euphrates was, by all accounts, overland southeast to Erzerum near the headwaters of the Euphrates. A difficulties found in a survey of this route in the 1840's by the British led to its termination with plans for a rail connection from the Med to the Persian Gulf and the rise of Steam ships making the connection to the Persian Gulf and India faster.

Actually, both hard and soft corals do catch plankton. A coral polyp (the individual coral animal) has a mouth surrounded by stinging tentacles. Hard corals stretch out their tentacles at night, when the plankton are drifting in the water. (Soft corals may catch plankton both at night and in the daytime.) The corals use their tentacles to sting the plankton and stuff it into their mouths.

Starting in the Mediterranean Sea, one would sail around Greece to the Aegean Sea, then through the Dardenelle into the Sea of Marmara, and then through the Straits of Bosporous (passing the City of Istanbul) into the Black Sea.
