if its a front wheel drive vehicle then it could be the axels

it should be right on top of the engine if im not mistaking. its a cartridge type filter, so you will have to remove the cap to pull it out. it should be a black cap on top of your engine just unscrew it and it should be inside.

Enough that with the seat all the way back, at 6'6" I can comfortably drive the car.

Check the linkage from the gear selector (shifter) to the transmission. It may have come loose. If it's intact, check your transmission fluid level. If this doesn't fix the problem, then you'll have to have it towed to the shop.

if you open the hood and look to the passenger side of the engine block you will see the oil filter canister and the right side exhuast manifold, the starter is located just under the exhuast manifold and is surrounded by heat shields, you will need to jack to car up and remove the front passenger wheel to get access to it underneath key word for this repair is lots a lots of LONG extentions for the heat shield removal and to remove the torque bolts holding the starter is place hope this helps!

well the best oil is mobil 1 from Europe. made espically for German cars. they know oil espically with the autobahn.

There is a special MB power steering fluid. It's about $30 a quart at your local import parts stores. I don't think there is a substitute.

The fuse box on a SL500 is underneath the hood, next to the power brake booster and master cylinder. It's that big square black plastic box...just open it...it's all there. There are also some additional fuses in the trunk, underneath the trunk lid's right hinge...it's that little black square under the hinge.

As to manually lowering the top on an SL....this question was answered a few weeks ago...search for that posting.

Pull the key out of the plastic remote. Look down in the crack, and you will see a gray little button. Press the button down with the key you pulled out, and flip the top plastic piece upwards while holding down the gray button. The battery will slide right out after that!

The car must be at a stop, and the top protector must be latched in the trunk. The locking handle above the rear view mirror is released, and the red switch on the center console is operated to lower (or raise) the top.

The rear of the top will raise first, to allow the cover to lift, and then the top will fold down and stow.

Under the hood, immediately before the driver. The brake booster is immediately behind it, and it will be a frosted white/translucent receiver. If it is low, either there is a leak in the system (not good), or the pads are severaly worn and need to be replaced.

Get the brakes looked at by a professional mechanic as stopping a 5,000 pound car is obviously a safety issue.
