Mercury Mountaineer

On a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer with the 5.0 liter V8 engine :

The engine oil dipstick is on the drivers side of the engine

There are three on the 98. Two are located on the exhaust manifold basically beneath the passenger seat area. The other is on the manifold that goes to the drivers side of the engine and is located by the tranny pan.

The owner manual states, unless the diff has been submerged in water, it never needs to be changed.

The vent control mechanism is powered by engine vacuum. Start the engine and let it idle while you open the hood and listen for the tell-tale hissing sound of an open vacuum line. Once you find the loose hose/tube, it's just a matter of finding the orifice to which it belongs and plugging it back there. If the hose/tube is damaged, repairs might first need to be done before they can be inserted back and stay attached.

There are also vacuum lines controlling the vents behind the glove box, here is a link to a site that will help you with that side of the troubleshooting.

P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1) does not necessarily mean the O2 sensor was bad, and for sure does not mean the catalatic conveter was bad. Stop throwing parts at this problem and take it to a professional, before you replace any more unnessary parts. You would be money ahead if you had done that is the first place.

Front drivers side of the engine. Behind the alternator. Hard to see and get to. It has a white plug with one wire. Fords oil pressure sending units are not real sending units. Your oil pressure gauge is a glorified idiot light. Its either on or off, always in the middle. I put a real pressure gauge in mine.

Is your battery getting weak ?

Not exactly sure but your local Autozone or O'Rielly will have a repair manual that will show or tell anything you need to know about the Make and model you are refering to.

The Keyless Entry Pad Code is located just foward of the drivers side rear access panel where the tire screw jack is located. You must get a bright flash light and shine it on the white plastic box while you gentle pry the side of the plastic interior panel away from it to allow you to read the large black five numbers. You will be laying down on your right side looking forward ( I had to fold the seats down to make it comfortable to do). It was there on my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer and should be the same for the Ford Explorer. The 5 numbers worked perfectly :)

The firing order is ( 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 )

The engine cylinder locations are numbered :

The towers on the ( 2 ) coil packs are numbered :

( 4 - 7 ) ( 3 - 5 )

( 8 - 2 ) ( 6 - 1 )

The diagnostic code PO735 on a Mercury Mountaineer indicates that the 5th gear has an incorrect gear ratio. This can be the result of a broken servo shaft.

I have an 02 mountaineer, go to page 137 in your owners guide. Its called belt minder. It works, just did it on mine.

Replace the hinges or attempt to bend them back by wedging a piece of wood under the door for a weekend. Replacing the hinges is your best bet.

There are tabs that are hard to see on side of the round plastic guide that sits on top of the seatback. Both will probably be on the side that faces the passenger window. Depress each of these tabs with a small screwdriver or similar, and work the headrest posts out. It is easiest if they are depressed simultaneously.

The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is incorporated into the Mass Airflow sensor. You cannot service the IAT sensor alone, you must actually service the Mass Airflow sensor instead. The Mass Airflow Sensor is located at the corner of the air filter housing where it meets the air intake duct.

The Mercury Mountaineer is a classy SUV. Some models have been known to have faulty alarms that either go off randomly or fail to go off when they should.

Have the Codes read by a code scanner; some autoparts stores do this with out charge (Autozone in Texas does this).

You can also purchase a code scanner, but they range from $150 - $500.

they say that the computer module on the 2004 model is in the back of the glove compartment.

however, in the previous models, like the 2003, it is in the plastic molding between the third and second window on the passenger side. there you will find your 5 digit code

I believe that is ( 21 U.S. gallons / 79.5 liters )

On a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer :

Open the drivers door and on the end of the door ( or the latch pillar ) you will

see an information sticker that shows the original size tires on the vehicle from

the factory
