firewall and the brake fluid reservoir ( looking from the FRONT of the
vehicle it is to the left of the reservoir )

How do heating controls work on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?
the heating controls are electronic and vacuum controlled if you take out the radio/heater/ac cluster, there are around 5 vacuum lines going to 1 switch..
- No control valve is used to vary the amount of coolant flowing through the heater core - coolant flows through the heater core all the time.
- Temperature adjustment is done by moving a damper / door down inside the heating/cooling ductwork.
This door controls the flow of the air through the heatercore - the more air moving through the core, the hotter the air being blown into the car.
- 1986-1995 used a traditional stiff wire cable from the control knob/slide to the door
- With the total redesign of the Taurus/Sables in 1996, Ford changed from stiff-wire cable connections to a small electric actuator motor to control the temperature blend door.
This actuator motor is one of the most common causes of heater problems in modern Ford vehicles.
- The directional flow control (defrost, vents, floor) is still a vacuum controlled switching 'manifold'.
Look for clear w/colored stripes rubber hoses behind the dash and up by the firewall to the right of the gas pedal.
- 1996-? Integrated dash panel - Removing the dash panel that contains the heating/cooling controls along with the radio controls is exactly the same procedure as removing the radio.

How can you tell the difference between relay solenoid or starter going bad in a Ford Windstar?
A starter will seldom "go bad", but when it does, you will definitely hear a "grinding" or "dragging" noise as it rotates (usually is slow to rotate). That condition is called "starter dragging", caused by worn bushings. When the bushings wear, the starter will drag against the armature inside the starter hull, causing the slow rotation and "dragging" or "grinding" sound. A single click when you try to start the vehicle is usually indicative of a faulty starter relay/solenoid. Or possibly just a loose cable. A rapid clicking sound is usually caused by a low battery. Could also be caused by a loose cale.

if the car turns then the fuel pump probally went out.Get some starting fluid and spray in the intake if it starts the fuel pump is bad.
It could also be the chrank shaft sensor if you check the coil pack and its not getting fire or it barely arcs then change the sensor you may have to change the coil packl aswell, depending on how little of an arc there is

Not likely to find it anywhere but in a Ford factory service manual. You do have a owners manual for fuses and such that will get to most problems.

i have a 96 merc. sable. the Taurus is basically the same, but my fuse box is under the steering wheel on the bottom of the dash where all of the wires are. try to look under the dash on the left side. hope this helps. the diagram is there or in the manual. My 1996 ford Taurus has a fuse box in the front engine compartment above the radiator. However, it is not clear what each is for? Chilton repair manual has most electrical diagrams and can be purchased for almost all cars at autozone. Chiltons can also be contacted on-line and definitely have what you need.

They are in the central junction box. [the fuse box under the dash] But they are integral with the box. You have to remove the fuse box, take it apart, and they are inside, soldered in. If you can solder, you can replace them.

If you have the metric trans, the pump is in the top of trans body, near to the engine. You must remove trans to get at the pump.
96 sable stuck in park position how do you fix it?
Pump the brake rapidly with them half engaged and attempt to shift it out.
It should come into gear.

Warpped rotor. rotors are warped have them checked and turned or replaced. they should be turned after every brake change

There is normally a switch near the light (or sometimes on the dash) that sets the light to:
Always on
Always off
On when the door is open, off when it's shut.
If that switch is in the correct position, it's going to either be the switch in the door pilar that is jammed in the on position, or a short somewhere in the miles of cable that make up the wiring loom.

One of the 'accessories' is locked-up and not turning.
Could be the:
- Alternator
- Waterpump (Vulcan engine)
- Power steering pump
- Air conditioning compressor
That happened on my Contour, and it was the alternator in that case.
Watch the front of the engine while someone else cranks it over - see what component is not turning - likely to be the culprit.

trunk liner on the right side ( passenger side ) There is an access hole in the trunk liner
The fuel pump relay is located in the power distribution box ( which is " live " ) located in the front of the engine compartment near the battery
( The fuel pump relay is relay # 30 )

Why does your Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable heat work fine above idle but gets cold at idle?
Two possibilities
- Engine coolant levels are low
- Water pump - impeller can wear down or come loose from the shaft
Add coolant to the reservoir on the left side of the engine compartment (reference Owners Manual for more detail.)
Might be a good opportunity to think about getting the system flushed and coolant replaced...

o. You need to check the level of anti-freeze on your radiator. Mine was low and not allowing fluid to flow through the heater core.

Check your coolant level is topped off in overflow container. had same problem ,temp gauge is ok because the coolant wasn't reaching the heater core, but the engine is being cooled at the thermostat portion of the engine

I believe there are series of devices called heater hoses/plugs that cool the engine and provide heat for the cabin upon demand. If these are broken or clogged, the heat won't work and the car may overheat when not moving. Get them replaced by a pro; it's a lot of work.
Well, of course it is going to be cold, until the engine warms up. A problem with it though, is that the coolant level may be low and that is why you would only have heat at higher rpms.
same problem I have.I think throtle position sensor and speed sensor can cause thise problem.try first any adjustment on throtle sensor then speed sensor. may be both wear out.
A faulty ABS speed sensor can give you those symptoms. Just to eliminate the possibility, remove the ABS fuse and take it for a test drive. If the problem goes away you have found the problem.
