Replace water pump belt on 2001 mercury sable?
Since the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt, see the "Related Questions" below for information on changing it.
Note: be sure to check if there's a serpentine belt routing diagram inside the engine compartment before you take it off! If there isn't one, make your own drawing.
Can you change just the lenses on the headlights of a 98 Mercury Sable?
The headlight assembly can be changed, but not just the actual clear lens on the front.
See "Related Questions" below for how to remove the headlight assembly, and also how to clean them
This being a 3.8 the upper intake is in the way. Remove the upper intake manifold before you continue.
Follow the speedometer cable from the firewall down past the engine rearward of the engine behind the intake and down to the transaxle (transmission) near where the right hand (passenger side) axle goes in. Eventually your hand (wrapped around the speedometer cable) will be unable to continue as a heat shield gets in the way.
The heat shield is clipped on and you can just pull it off. Behind the heat shield lies the sensor. Unplug the wiring connector (2 wires) then remove one bolt to remove the sensor from the transaxle. Be careful not to kink the speedometer cable while removing the speed sensor. If you kink it your speedometer will bounce until you replace the cable with a new one.
With the sensor out of the transaxle, you can now separate it from the cable for replacement.

How do you remove a front axle on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?
remove tire. brake caliper. remove nut in center of rotor. swing hub assembly out of your way. pull axle out of transmission. some have axle clips holding them in transmission. not hard. get a haynes manual on your car. very detailed and easy to understand. some machanical knowledge and the manual, 2 to 3 hrs of your time you will be all set.
Answerloosen the center nut(driveshaft nut)lift car & remove wheel
Separate ball joint from spindle
pry down on the lower control arm and pull rotor/spindle assembly out and away so that the outer driveshaft end that goes through the center of the brake rotor comes out.
Tie the spindle/rotor assembly out of the way (or have someone hold it).
Get a long screwdriver/prybar and pry the inner cv joint out of the trany.
You may loose trany fluid so make sure you have a drain pan handy.
Put new shaft in carefully as not to damage seal.
reverse instructions to reassemble
Check trany fluid when done
AnswerOne thing to add is that I like to use a 3 arm jaw puller to push the axle out of the spindle/hub. Makes it a whole lot easier.Beware getting the lower ball joint loose on some model years. Could be a bigger problem than everything else combined.
Oh yeah, the axle nut torque specification is 170-220 ft.lbs.

How many pelts to make a sable coat?
Many many pelts. So think about it- is it that worth it for killing those many animals. Example: Its takes over 500 chinchilla pelts to make a coat- and that's if they are all big chinchillas. That would be killing almost 10 percent of their extinct population.
Need the diagram for the under the hood fuse box of a 2000 mercury sable?
You can view the Owner Guide online at :
www . motorcraft service . com ( no spaces )
Click on Owner Guides
It has the diagrams for the fuse box located in the passenger compartment and the Power Distribution Box located in the engine compartment
In a nutshell, very carefully. Remove the clamps and split the hoses with a knife where the hose is on the outlet tubes. Take some spray lubricant and spray some on the connections while you force a screwdriver around the hose. That will keep you from damaging the outlet tubes. I hope you are not replacing the heater core as it is a very large chore.
This isn't going to be easy unless you have the smaller size 'Vulcan" engine - in which case you might actually be able to get your hands down behind the engine.
Couple of thoughts:
Where is the turn signal relay on a 1995 Oldsmobile 88?
Are you sure you don't mean fuse? The turn signal fuse is under the drivers side dash in the fuse box. The inside label of the panel will tell you which one.
If your turn signal is not working, also check the flasher. They are a type of relay too, and located in the shroud area next to the steering wheel. If you have an a/c car, you will need to drop the drivers side shroud cover to get to the flasher. Easy fix, just takes about 20 minutes to undo all the bolts. (9/32 or 7 mm) for the dash, 10mm for the nuts holding the kick panel.
How do you replace the ignition coil on a Sable or Taurus?
For the 3.0 "Vulcan" engine, it can't be much easier since the coil is sitting on the very front of the engine.
It get's much tighter on the DOHC "Duratec" engine with the coilpack mounted on the backside. Some very good ideas can be used from the suggestions / information for changing sparkplugs on these engines - See "Related Questions" below for more about that.
Changing the coil:
Alternatively, label the wires, take a picture, or draw it out BEFORE disconnecting the wires.
Coil on a 3.0 Vulcan Engine
My grand parents have a Ford Taurus 1997 3.0L gl edition. It has a coil pack on the front head tranny end. If you have the same then mark your plug wires and pull them out of the coil pack. Usually you squeeze the plug wire (they have clips holding them to the coil pack) then they're 4 small bolts that hold the coil pack down. I think there 8mm bolts. You have to pull out the wire and clip going to the coil pack also. don't forget to unhook you ground from the battery before starting all this. So go in this order:
1. unhook ground
2. number wires
3. unplug coil pack wires
4. unplug spark plug wires
5. remove 4 bolts
coil pack should come off.
ps Usually cylinder 1 2 3 is on the back and 4 5 6 is on front, but as long as you know which wire go where it doesn't matter. if you're just removing the wires from the coil pack then you could call them a b c, just as long as the wire and the place on the coil pack are marked the same.
How do you remove a dash on a 1990 Mercury Sable?
The dash actually comes out as an assembly. In other words you wont be removing a lot of stuff from the dash to get it out. Remove the steering column. (4 nuts on the bottom, one steering sector shaft bolt, shift cable, and several electrical connectors, and it's out) There are three 9/32nds screws across the top of the dash under the speaker grills and a trim cover in the middle. Behind each kick panel there is a bolt, remove them. Above steering column area, beneath the speedometer there is either a bolt or nut. There may be a bolt or nut under the middle of the dash in the floor tunnel area. That should be all the bolts and nuts. You will need to disconnect the speedo cable, ad all wiring harness and vacuum connectors as you pull the dash away from the firewall. You will need to use a lifting motion as you pull the driver's side of the dash away because there is a reinforcement bracket that you have to come up over. If you are removin the heater core, you dont even have to pull the dash all the way out. You can swing it away on the passengers side, set it on the passenger's seat and leave the driver's side pretty much in place. That will get you access behind to pull out the heater case. If you do that, be careful that you disconnect the battery, so that a light bulb under the dash doesn't burn a hole in your seat.
How do you determine what size tap die to use on a 10mm bolt broke off by thermostat of Ford Taurus?

How do you get the check engine light to go off?
The corect and only real way:
Have the car scanned, this will tell you what is wrong.
Repair the fault.
Have the car scanned and re-set.
If you re-set the system without repair it will just come back on.
Is there any fuel additive that will reduce ethanol effects?
Yes, adding gasoline without ethanol will reduce the affects of ethanol by diluting it. You do not say which effects of ethanol you wish to reduce.
What follows is true but sarcastic and not actually recommended. If you add almost anything non fuel to your fuel tank such as water it will reduce the effects of ethanol. Specifically it will reduce the effect of powering your engine.
What causes heat and AC to only come out of the defroster vents on a Ford Taurus Mercury Sable?
Make sure you have vacuum going into the cabin from the engine. The vacuum line runs from the intake manifold to a vacuum reservoir, which is a round plastic ball looking thing, then through more hoses through the firewall and into the cabin.
AnswerYou have an air management problem. The air management controls are vacuum operated and the default position is defrost. You probably have lost vacuum to the dash control unit, possibly due to a broken or pinched line running into the dash, or maybe a leaking vacuum canister. The only way to diagnose is to use a vacuum gauge and pump tester to go through the system from beginning to end, and see where your vacuum loss is.
