No, it did not really change sides. Burma was on the side of the Allies during the Japanese invasion. The Allies did not treat Burma as an enemy, only those members of the Japanese puppet government.

Why did the British fight wars with Burma and Afghanistan?
The three Afghan wars and the Panjdeh incident were mainly related to "The Great Game" a term coined by a 19th intelligence officer for the clash between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for influence in Central Asia. Afghanistan was seen as a cause of trouble in its own right with border disputes and incursions and as a necessary buffer state between British India and the Russians. The first war with Burma was fought again over border disputes and territorial integrity with an expanding Burmese state. This changed in later years to one of acquisition of Burma into what was known as the British Raj as similar to the competition with Russia, Burma was seen as moving closer or being taken over by the French who were in Laos. Taking over lower Burma and the important port of Rangoon in the second war and upper Burma including Mandalay in the third war.
It really depends on how you want to live. I spent 14 months in SE Asia on under $10K (visas, airfare, etc...). I need very little in the way of comforts so I try to move outside of the Lonely Planet routes. If you're anything like me you could get away with $6K easy. If you're leaving from the states I saw airfare on sale the other day for $400 from US to Bangkok at cheapoair.
Was a Yorkshire Army Regiment held captive in a POW camp in Burma in World War 2?
Not at all,
From ????????????
Answer I found a website that lists the British units that were serving in Southeast Asia in 1939. It was later in 1940 or so that the British had to evacuate Burma. Then in 1945, they re-captured it. So, I'm not sure if you are referring to a unit that served in 1940 or 1945. The British Regiments were named after regions or cities. Usually the name would be "West Yorkshire". Each Regiment would contain 2 or more battalions that would serve in different theaters of operation. The British learned in WW1 that if the entire regiment served at one battle, then the chances of a loss would be devastiting on the home where they were from. The link below lists the 2nd Battalion, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry as serving in the Maymyo Infantry Brigade Area in Burma. I suspect that this is the unit you are seeking. Reference this page that lists the Organization of British units in 1939:
