What was Pocahontas's Christian name?
Rebecca
She converted to Christianity in 1614 after taken as a hostage and was given the name Rebecca. Soon after she was introduced and married John Rolfe. Not long after they left for England and in 1617 she died there. She is buried in England and her son returned to Jamestown as an adult and lived to the ripe old age of 90.
How did Pocahontas impact history?
She hasn't except for the legends about her. The book that Smith wrote was all lies and he never met her. In fact, her real story is much more interesting than the fairytales about her. The colonists took her hostage for 4 years and while she was a hostage she became a Christian and changed her name to Rebecca. John Rolf came to Jamestown with his tobacco seeds and met her. They married and left for England. She is about 19 years old when they leave and while at his family estate she has a baby boy. Not long after she dies and he takes the baby to his sister to take care of and leaves for Jamestown. Years later the baby as a young man decides to go back to Jamestown where he has property he has inherited from his mother, grandfather, and father. He returns to Jamestown, marries, has 6 children and the last known historical reference to him is when he is 90 years old and he signs over the property he inherited to the city of Jamestown. I think this is a fantastic true story and so much better than the silly fable about her.
Was Pocahontas an Indian princess?
No.The story we know is not true. Actually the colonist landed in an area of 14,000 Native Americans and in the worse land in the area. Powhatan pretty much left them alone. I think he figured that they would die from the bad water and disease . He was fairly right. Within 6 months there were only 34 men left alive of the 104 who came. It wasn't until after his death that the brother of Powhatan attacked the colony. The story about Smith is also not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. That was John Rolfe.
