Puritans

The Puritans wanted to purify the Roman Catholic religion. " They believed that man existed for the glory of God, that his first concern in life was to do God's will and so to receive future happiness. They believed that Jesus Christ was the center of public and personal affairs, and was to be exalted above all other names." according to The Oxford History of the American People by Samuel Morison.

They hoped to form religious communities in the new land.

John Winthrop was a Puritan who emigrated to colonial America. He was an outstanding administrator and religious leader. He became the governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony in the middle of the 17th century.

Many of the settlers in Connecticut came from the Netherlands. The first colony in what is now Connecticut was named New Netherland. Other settlers and colonists in Connecticut were from England.

They had problems with diseases, bad soil, food,and water. They also had problems with people being accused of witches... so they would kill you if you were suspected of being a witch!! horrible!

Nathaniel Hawthorne, or originally known as Nathaniel Hawthorne. He changed his name to disassociate himself from his relative John Hawthorne, who was a Salem witch trail judge at the time. This just showed his contempt for a portion of the 'puritan' method.

because puritans believed only in work and prayer. if you weren't working you must be praying or sleeping because almost everything else was a sin. they considered people doing things such as acting or even just watching plays to be sinful and lime should be spent with god.

Sumerian communities were divided by social structure. There were 3 social classes/or groups.

At the top was the upper class. They had the most money and power. In this class there were the priests, kings, government officials, and warriors. They had finer homes.

Then came the middle class. There was the artisans, merchants, farmers, and traders. If you needed something they were the ones who had stuff. Normal people lived in small mud-brick houses.

Lastly, came the lower class. They were treated harshly. They were considered the enslaved farmers, people forced to work in temples, an slaves.

The Sumerian communities were divided into city-states. At the center of each city-state there was a ziggurat. They beleived that the gods lived here. Only gods/godesses were allowed in here.

Each group was seeking a way to practice their own religion. The Pilgrims were 60 people from the same English village and planned to settle near Jamestown, but were blown off course. They wanted to leave England because they thought the Church of England had too much ritual and decorations,The Quakers were organized by William Penn who had gotten an land grant from the king to pay off a debt the king owed his father. Several times Penn had been arrested for his Quaker beliefs and was jailed. He had to leave England. Both groups were very much alike in the fact they wanted to practice in their own ways.
