I had the first remote control vcr,and I bought in 1981.It had cost around $1200+ dollars that my grandad said that I would be carrying it on my back trying to sell it for food whenever times got tough. It was a Mitsubishi two (2 hr. speed sp and 6 hr slp ) so if you had a tape recorded in a four hour format, it would not deliver the picture very well.It was a direct dirve and had less moving parts than a belt driven vcr-??? 30% less ???.or mabe more maybe 60 %.

Any 'One for All' brand remote will work for sure. I have a Symphonic TV, too. Most large department stores and almost all big electronics stores have programmable remote controls for sale. These remotes are designed to replace missing or broken remotes and can be programmed to operate almost any newer television on the market. (The instructions come with the remotes.) Oh, and they don't cost too much, either. Under ten bucks in most cases. Note: There are still a few "hard-headed" manufacturers who make sets that have remotes with "oddball codes" and they cannot be replaced with the universal remotes. Some Symphonic sets are like this. Buy a remote from a company that will take it back if it won't program to your set. Ask them up front about returns. Radio Shack is one such company that will take the remote back if you cannot make it work with your unit and if you return it with all the stuff it came with - including the receipt.

How does a remote change a channel?
Pushing a button to change the channel on a remote control begins a process that causes the remote to carry out the command. It works something like this:
- You want to go to channel 13 and push these buttons on the remote control. This causes it to touch the contact beneath it, and this completes the "channel change" circuit on the integrated circuit board, which detects this.
- The integrated circuit then sends the "channel change" command to the LED (Light-emitting diode) at the front of the remote. [LEDs are able to transmit visible, ultraviolet, and infrared waves and are very useful across a variety of disciplines.]
- The LED sends a series of light pulses which corresponds to the numerical code that indicates which channel the TV should switch to.
(These numerical codes, also called binary commands, are each seven digits long. Each different command or number has a different binary command. For instance, on Sony TVs, the "volume up" command is 001 0010 while the "change to channel 13" command would read like this: 000 0000 000 0010 (there are 14 digits because the channel you want has 2 digits and each digit has it's own binary command).
On the TV set, the infrared receiver picks up the signal sent from the remote control and converts the light pulses back into the electrical signal. This signal is then passed to the microprocessor, which completes the command of changing the channel.
