What type of salmon are in the skagit river?
All.
King (chinook). The lushest fresh salmon, king is the highest in fat and usually the most expensive, prized for its silken, melting texture, which is almost like smoked salmon.
Sockeye (red). With a deep, natural color, sockeye is lower in fat but still high overall, allowing the flavor to better come through. Many salmon lovers, including me, consider this the best salmon-eating experience.
Coho (silver). A comer, according to Bill Webber and Thea Thomas, independent Cordovan fishermen. It's already prized by sport fishermen for its fight, and soon, the Cordovans hope, by diners for its mild but distinctive flavor. The most widely available autumn fresh salmon.
Pink (humpback). So delicate and pale that Thomas compares it to sole---which she does not mean as a compliment. She recalls a tasting for food writers at which many rated pink the highest. "How could they?" she asks. The likely answer: "A lot of these people had never had salmon in their life."
Chum (dog). Like pink, chum is fished in high numbers and is lower in fat than other varieties; when it spawns in intertidal waters, it doesn't need to build up energy to swim upstream. Its roe, however, is the most valued of the five varieties, because of its size and flavor. After being strained and separated, the eggs make particularly good ikura--- the fat, bright-orange pearls familiar in sushi rolls.
No. A salmon is a fish so it has scales instead of hair like mammals, not both.
No, all commercially canned foods get cooked in the canning process. The food is usually placed in the can raw, the can is sealed, then the can is steamed to sterilize the food. This steaming also cooks the food.

What is the average price for salmon?
Salmon could range greatly in price given its species and location. If salmon is purchased in the desert, it could be up to 10-12 dollars for a single fillet. If near the harbor where they are fished, conversely, it would be no more than 5 dollars for the same size fillet.
The best piece of meat from the fillet, coming from the back or sides of the salmon, quite near the tail end.
How long can salmon from a can keep in fridge?
Time until actual spoilage depends upon too many variables to make a definitive statement. Plan to use it as any seafood leftovers - preferably within a couple days.
Are the omega-3 health benefits from salmon obtained equally from smoked salmon?
The "Nutrition Action Health Letter" (NAH) of June 2004 (published by the Center For Science in the Public Interest) gave the following info on the content of omega-3s in salmon:
"8 ounces of raw salmon cooks down to 6 ounces."
OMEGA-3 CONTENT "Wild Salmon: 3000 mg in 6 oz cooked" "Farmed Salmon: 4500 mg in 6 oz cooked" (farmed is also much higher in toxic PCBs) "Smoked Salmon: 2700 mg in 6 oz cooked. According to an analysis conducted by the industry group Salmon of the Americas for NAH, smoked salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fats. The 10 products tested ranged from 270 mg to 740 mg per ounce. Government numbers suggesting that smoked salmon has lower levels of omega-3s are based on 2 samples that were tested several decades ago."
NAH accepts no advertising and is the only source of unbiased, non-government food info that I am aware of. I suggest subscribing to this publication.
Put water in large saucepan and bring to boiling.
While wating for water peel and slice the potatoes into thin slices across the entire potato (so they turn out looking like potato chips). Dice the onion and cut the salmon into thick chunks.
Add the all the ingredients to the water. Because salmon cooks quickly and the potatoes are sliced thinly this cooks up in a whip...maybe 10-15 minutes. Just watch for the salmon to turn that nice pink color and cut a chunk open to see if it's done.
I concocted this recipe when we were staying at a Marriot Residence Inn in Mil Pitas, CA. Sasha was really sick and didn't feel like going out(not that he likes to anyway but we do sometimes on vacation).
I prepared this soup with so much love and a little bit of intuition and it was DELICIOUS. I hope you enjoy it to...try feeding it to a sick friend or loved one who loves salmon.

Do salmon incubate their eggs?
NO salmon dont incubate their eggs, fish dont incubate their eggs at all, they lay them and the male fish swims by the fish and releases the sperm near the eggs and they become fertilized outside of the female fish.
Yes, plenty in fact. However, the salmon industry has been in trouble for the past 5 years because of poor farming practices. In short, too many salmon were put together in farms and they were fed with some product that caused them to get sick. Because they were close together, most contracted the new virus and some salmon escaped the farms, thus passing the virus to wild varieties and salmon in other farms. In a rush to make money, Chilean salmon businessmen destroyed their own livelihood. The industry is recovering but it will take time and in the meanwhile, countries like the US, Canada, Japan, are producing a lot of salmon

What are the affects on wild salmon when farmed salmon escape?
Farmed salmon can tranmet diseases to wild stocks of salmon. If farmed salmon enters the rivers to spawn and interbreeds with wild samon they can contribute to what can be called 'genetical pollution'. As each stock of salmon in each particular salmon river has been adapted to the very conditions in this river, generation after generation, for thousands of years, such an interference is undesirable.
