Overcast.

The overcast stitch is a type of hand sewing used on a raw (unfinished) edge to prevent unraveling of the fabric.

Minnie Mouse usually wears a matching red dress and bow with white polka dots and yellow high heels. You may be able to find these as a thrift store. A red dress without polka dots may be usable if you can't find something that matches exactly. If you find a long dress (and are handy with a sewing machine) you can cut off excess from the bottom and use that for the bow.

You likely want a fitted cover so sew a cover 1-2" smaller than the pillow insert. So for a 30x30" insert generally you'd want to sew a 28x28" cover. To test the fit just pin the fabric around the cushion until it looks right then measure the fabric.

Add 1/2" (or more if your fabric frays easily) seam allowances to all seams for 29x29" square. Square corners aren't filled out by the pillow insert so round them off, either trace around a bowl before sewing or eyeball it when sewing.

Adding an invisible zipper along one edge is a good idea. You'll need to increase the seam allowance where you be add the zipper. Alternately you can overlap the fabric on the back like an envelope to insert and remove the cushion.

First, do a search on eBay for your machine and that will give you some idea on what others are asking for on their machine.

The Kenmore 117 959 is 1947 vintage. It isn't a big seller. I have seen one re-listed on eBay several times at 70 bucks. It still hasn't sold. I got mine at Goodwill for 12 bucks in the cabinet, came with all the old Greist "crowfoot style' sewing attachments. This is the second one I have bought just for the cabinet it was in.

This is a heavy "boat anchor". The style is like a b52 bomber, the paint finish is crinkle brown, and looks very post-war. Straight stitch only, direct drive potted motor (means no belt to break) all metal gears. The 117 motor is less than 1 amp so there isn't as much power to push a needle through fabric or go as fast as a higher amp machine. If you are looking to sew heavy materials, it should work OK, but I look for more amps in a motor.

If you find one of these and want to use it for sewing, make sure it comes with the bobbin case, foot control and power cord and all the parts, as those are not made any more. Cracked wiring can be replaced, and motors can be replaced. but is it worth it? If you buy one screw on eBay it will cost you 12$ or more per part PLUS shipping - all the old vintage sewing machine parts will. There isn't a big resale value on these old 117's.

If you are looking to restore a sewing machine with resale value, go for the Singer 301, 401, 403, 501 series. Brother also made some very good machines in the '50's -'70's. Stay away from anything with plastic gears, as those decompose over time.

If you are looking for a good strong machine for your own personal sewing, I love my Kenmore 158.523 zig zag. This is a lovely machine, lavender-silver and cream. Strong, fast 1.2amp motor, belt driven, all metal gears, and it will pound through leather in decorative stitch mode with a regular needle.

The 158.523 also has decorative 2-sided stitch cams for it (eBay, or keep an eye open at the thrifts as they do turn up for cheaper than the eBay vendors sell them for when they find them at the thrifts).

I got my 158.523 for 8 bucks, had to get a foot pedal and power cord for it (eBay), but the machine runs beautifully and is strong. find a buttonholer attachment for a long straight shank for this one.

With all vintage machines, regular maintenance is a must. oiling and greasing the gears and lint cleaning should be done on schedule, but a little maintenance done will keep that machine going long after you are gone.

A "serged" hem is the kind of hem you'll find in most store-bought clothes. It is made with a sewing machine called a "serger" that uses three or four threads and a blade near the needle that trims the fabric as it is sewn.

It's called "serged" in the USA but in other parts of the world this style of hem is call an "overlocked" hem.

Serged hems are a cheaper style of manufacturing as opposed to "folded and stitched" hems and items like table linens with serged hems are usually quite a bit cheaper, if your thinking of buying table linens keep in mind many people do not like serged hems as they tend to curl outward and also tend to fray.

A seam ripper is used to take seams out of materials. Like say for example I wanted to make a quilt out of several different materials, so i would sue a seam ripper to take apart them materials to make the quilt.

You use a seam-ripper to remove stitches in a fabric without tearing the fabric, instead of scissors or something else. Generally you use a seam ripper and hook it into the stitch at the seam, in order to be able to go back and re-sew the area without damaging the material. :D

The presser foot holds the fabric in place when you stitch. There are several different types of presser feet depending on what you are sewing. There is a different one for putting in zippers and another for sewing on buttons. The list could go on quite extensively.
