The Knights went to Malta in 1530 (not in 1522). In 1522 they were located on the island of Rhodes (having settled there in 1309) however during such year they were invaded and defeated by the Ottomans. They were allowed to leave and, following seven years of wandering in Europe, finally Charles V of Spain gave them - in 1530 - the North African port of Tripoli and the Maltese Islands (in which they settled).

What was the significance of Sicily during World War 2?

After the German forces in North Africa surrendered, the Allies had to find a location to advance towards Germany. There were several possibile areas they could launch an amphibious attack. 1: Southern France, 2; Corsica or Sardena, 3 Sicily, or 4; Greece or other regions further to the East. Sicily was choosen. They used several diversionary plans to mislead the Germans. However, Germany re-inforced Sicily with Italian forces and the Herman Goring Division, all under the command of the Italian Commando Supremo. The HG Division was placed basically in the center of the island so they could strike where the landing site. They expected the landings to be on the North side of the island but it was on the South. The invasion of Sicily was the first major amphibious landing with massed troops at one place and one time in the European Theater. The fighting was rough and there were a lot of mistakes; American paratrooper aircraft where shot down by friendly fire and British paratrooper aircraft crashed into the sea. Sicily was unique in the British and American paratroopers were dropped there and also German paratroopers were dropped to re-inforce their positions. The fighting in Sicily lasted only 2 months; July and August. The terrible fighting in Sicily and the Allied bombing of Rome, convinced the Italian civilians and their government that they were tired of the war and did not want to subject their country to the destruction of war. The Italian leaders secretly began negotiations for terms of surrender but they did not announce it until 8 September 1943, on the eve of the landings at Salerno, just south of Naples.

How did the campaigns in north Africa Sicily the Atlantic and in the air help the allies prepare to defeat Italy and Germany?

The Allied Forces learned the fighting strategies of the Germans. They learned their value system and other military secrets from the Germans who had been captured. They learned they needed to in BIG, HARD AND FAST to defeat the Germans. They learned they could not lose momentum. They learned to overcome mistakes, disasters (like the gale storm that hit their man made harbor or to make tank attachments to overcome the hedges in France). They learned they had to cooperate, plan, and not go too soon before they had all they needed to make the invasion work. They learn that if things went wrong there is a way to fix the problem with a lot of brains and brawn. Those campaigns taught them a lot. My most favorite lesson they learned was to use good intelligence (spying), use deception, make the deception work well both ways and to use the underground resistance network. They also realized the Germans are hard to fight but they are not IMPOSSIBLE to fight and defeat. They took that lesson and spread the knowledge throughout the forces.

Are people from Sicily descendants of the ancient Phoenicians?

The original inhabitants of Sicily were over-run by the Indo-European Sicels, who were not Phoenician.

Sicily was colonised by the surplus population of mainland Greece, who were shipped there to relieve the problems they were creating in their home cities.

These Greek cities were established around the fertile coast of the island, and the Sicels were pushed into the mountainous interior.

The Phoenician influence came from Carthage (Carthaginians originated from Phoenicia) which tried to take over Sicily, but was repelled by the Greeks and Rome which entered the scene against Carthage and took over.

The population was further diluted over the centuries by slaves introduced by the Romans, by Vandals, Goths, and later in succession Arabs, Normans, Germans, French, Spanish etc - you name it.

Can a walkie talkie purchased in the US be used in Italy and Sicily?

You can use it in the sense that it will operate and work regardless of where you are in the world. Some countries are very sensitive about transporting communications items such as radios across borders, but I suspect that they have greatly relaxed the restrictions due to cell phones. A quick call to the Italian Consulate would answer the question as to whether there are any issues regarding them.
