How do you keep your feet warm while skiing?

Skiing means cold temperatures and cold temperatures can mean cold feet. Make sure that you wear "ski" socks. Ski socks are generally thicker and should go all the way up your shin. You can wear two ski socks if you like. You can also take your ski boots to the ski shop and have them put in battery operated heated footbeds. These are wonderful for the skier that skis every day. You clamp a small battery on your boot that turns the heat on and off in your boot. Some systems have low and high settings. You have to remember to recharge your batteries though! The batteries are very tough and can handle most ski crashes you have. This system can be expensive, but is worth it. You can also purchase heat packs that you shake up to activate heat. You place them under the sole of your foot. These usually just work for a few hours and then you throw them away. You can put these in gloves as well. Make sure that your feet aren't too hot because they might sweat. This will make them damp and could then lead to cold feet. Make sure to dry your boots out when you are at home. They make boot dryers you can place them on. Or you can pull out the lining to dry them. Do this daily as your boots will most likely become wet from snow and ice.

What is the average size of a ski resort?

There really is no average size. Sure, you could take all the resorts and average their size but there are a few problems with that. First of all, there are so many ski resorts in America that it would take forever to get the average. Second, the size of resorts varies so greatly that if you did take the time to average it out it wouldn't be a very good representation. I know of ski resorts that have over 35 lifts and 200+ runs, but also of ski resorts that have 1 lift and 5 runs. If you really wanted an average I would suggest averaging the ski resorts within a county or if you live in or want the average of a small state or one with only a few resorts average that.

Did Norway or Finland start cross-country skiing?

3 answers after a merger:

1. Pre-historic Nordic people invented skiing to assist hunting, military technique, and as a practical transportation for themselves and the Samis. The oldest and most accurately documented evidence of skiing origins is found in modern day Norway and Sweden. The earliest primitive carvings circa 5000 B.C. depict a skier with one pole, located in Rødøy, an island in the Nordland region of Norway. The first primitive ski was found in a peat bog in Hoting, Sweden which dates back to 2500 or 4500 B.C. Joel Berglund reported in 2004 the discovery of a primitive ski, or "85cm long piece of wood", carbon tested by researchers in 1997 while excavating a Norse settlement near Nanortalik, Greenland. The primitive ski dated back to 1010, and is thought to be Greenland's oldest ski brought by Norsemen circa 980 A.D.

2. It is centuries old, exact origins unknown. Widely attributed to ancient Norsemen who began gliding on long flat boards to cross vast snow covered distances more quickly. They called this mode of travel "shee" or "skee." Norseman who had to deal with downhill sections carried a stick -- the first ski pole -- which they dragged between their legs as a primitive brake.

Lift served downhill skiing evolved in Europe prior to World War I, and became popular in the USA in the 1930s. Cross country and downhill skiing did not become thought of as separate sports in this country until Hannes Schneider brought the Arlberg method to North Conway NH in the late 1930s.

3. Before it was a sport, skiing was an important means of transportation.

The exact origin of skiing is unclear, but there is evidence that Scandinavians were using skis to travel and hunt over snow-covered terrain as far back as 4,000 years ago.

Organized slalom races were first introduced in Europe during the 1920s and the first world championship was organized in 1931. Shortly thereafter, Americans caught on and interest in this country snowballed throughout the 1930s.

Alpine skiing made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. Giant slalom first appeared at the 1952 Oslo Games and the super giant slalom, or super G, was added at the 1988 Calgary Games.

Why is skiing popular?

There is nothing else like it. The wind in your face. The extreme speeds you can only get from skiing. The air and acrobatics you can do off a jump. Nothing but you, a piece of plastic, and the ice (or powder, whatever you prefer to ski on). "Nothing else compares"-Jake Zamansky (US Olympic Skier)

When was skiing first introduced as a sport?

Three answers after a merger:

1. According to Wikipedia:

The first primitive evidence of Skis (carvings) were found in circa. 50000 BC, in Norway. The oldest ski found is from Greenland, dating back to about 1010.

In 1850 in Norway, Telemark skis with Camber and stiff bindings were being produced, followed by Sidecut and todays 'Stem/ Parallel' skiing styles.

"Before skis were used for fun and leisure, the ski was used for work and transportation. The oldest known version is a wide, short ski found in Sweden that has been shown to be over 4500 years old, and cave and rock drawings suggest that skis were used even long before then."

2.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia states, "Skiing was originally a practical way of getting from one place to another in packed or crusted snow. In Norse Myth, skiing was invented by Skadi, the snowshoe goddess. The word "ski" entered the English langauge from Norwegian in 1890. Previous to that time, English speakers considered skiing to be a type of shoeshoeing. In countries where loose snow dominates, the indigenous population developed snowshoes that did not slide rather than skis which do."

3.

Believe it or not since the last ice age; in the Scandinavian countries Skis as old as 8,000 years old have been found. In fact, one of the female jotun of Norse mythology was a woman named Skadi, after whom Skiing is named. Skadi was an adept skier, so skilled she could outrun falcons while in a dive, and she could maintain that speed for hours. The skiing the old Norse peoples of Europe did, was cross country; in ancient times in southern Sweden, where Scandinavian peoples come from, it was the fastest way to get around before the introduction of the horse. Again, Viking peoples did not do downhill skiing, the oldest form of skiing is in fact cross country, cross country came first and indeed cross country skiing was used as a mode of transportation. The fastest skiers in Scandinavian society, were often made chieftain or king's messengers. Chieftain's messengers I mean, not actually chieftains. And yes to answer your question all Viking soldiers were adept skiers it was kinda of a necessary skill in their geographic region.

What is Smart Style safety program?

Smart Style is a terrain park safety program designed by Burton and the National Ski Areas Association. The idea is to continue the proper use and progression of freestyle terrain at mountain resorts, while at the same time delivering a unified message that is clear, concise, and effective.

Smart Style displayed with orange ovals of varying size depending on the resort and the level of difficulty the terrain park is.

The four main parts to Smart Style you will see on signs at resorts are listed below.

* MAKE A PLAN * Every time you use Freestyle Terrain, make a plan for each feature you want to use. * Your speed, approach and takeoff will directly affect your maneuver and landing. * LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP * Before getting into freestyle terrain observe all signage and warnings * Scope around the jumps first not over them * Use your first run as a warm up run and to familiarize yourself with the terrain * Be aware that the features change constantly due to weather, usage, grooming and time of day * Do not jump blindly and use a spotter when necessary * EASY STYLE IT * Know your limits and ski/ride within your ability level * Look for small progression parks or features to begin with and work your way up * Freestyle skills require maintaining control on the ground and in the air * Do not attempt any features unless you have sufficient ability and experience to do so safely * Inverted aerials increase your risk of injury and are not recommended * RESPECT GETS RESPECT * Respect the terrain and others * One person on a feature at a time * Wait your turn and call your start * Always clear the landing area quickly * Respect all signs and stay off closed terrain and features

What is an alpine ski Binding Indemnification Agreement?

Ski binding manufacturers will indemnify ski shops, who mount and adjust their bindings, against claims from skiers who are injured while using the bindings. The manufacturers update their lists annually. Once a binding model falls off the indemnification list, ski shops are no longer indemnified for mounting or adjusting the bindings. In the event of a lawsuit, the ski shop would have to defend itself in court, rather than having the manufacturer's lawyers defend the suit. Because of this, very few shops will touch a binding which is not on the indemnification list.

Ski binding indemnification lists are compiled by the National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association. The NSSRA qualifies their compiled list with the following: "Every effort has been made to insure the accuracy of the list. But please remember that the last word on accuracy is that provided by the vendors, usually in their tech manuals."

What chemicals are in fake snow?

If you are referring to "man made snow" found at many ski hills or corn snow (because of its shape) it is made from water. If the water is coming from a stream, river or a pond it is run through a filter to prevent clogging the snow gun but whatever is in the water is in the snow, so don't eat the snow.

What is the closest ski resort to Lynchburg VA?

Wintergreen Resort in Wintergreen, VA is about 40-45 miles north of Lynchburg. Take Route 29 north just north of Amherst to Route 151 north, turn left. Follow Route 151 for 21 miles to Route 664. Turn left and Wintergreen is 4 miles ahead on Route 664.

Wintergreen might be a bit closer, but Snowshoe would be your best choice in that area and it's not much farther.

I've been to both, and they're both good. Wintergreen is closer, though.

What kind of ski wax should you use for moderate weather?

There are usually 3 basic ski wax's, cold temp, warm temp, and all temp. An all temp wax works just as well as a specific temp wax unless your trying to shave microns of your lap times. I strongly suggest using Choad Cheese snowboard wax, it's locally sourced handcrafted wax, and it's made in the USA.
