Was my daughter bitten by a spider?

Many spider bites are harmless and commonly look similar to a bee sting. They will have redness and minor swelling at the site which will subside with pain medication such as Tylenol. More severe symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, chills, extreme pain at the site, and fever. Black widow and the brown recluse spiders are two spiders who's bites are poisonous. Persons with more severe symptoms should be seen by a doctor.

Are banana spiders poisonous?

The Banana Spider is known to hide among bananas shipped to the US and is really called the Brazilian Wandering Spider. These spiders are aggressive and very venomous and not intimidated by size (can attack people when threatened).

The odd part about the Banana Spider is that studies indicate only 33% of the spider bites actually contain any significant amount of venom, but those that are injected with venom could be in serious danger!!!!!!

If you are bitten by a Brazilian Wandering spider (Phoneutria spp.), you should seek immediate emergency treatment as the venom could possibly be life threatening. The Phoneutria not only has a potent neurotoxin, but is said to have one of the most excruciatingly painful spider bites of all spiders due to its high concentration of serotonin.

Despite the Banana Spider's reputation as the world's deadliest spider, there are multiple studies that dispute the ability for the spider to actually kill a human and one study suggested that a little over 2% of these spider bites (mostly in children) were serious enough to require antivenom.

On the other hand, there are other studies suggesting that the Banana Spider is indeed the most toxic spider in the world based upon toxicology studies. One of the most notable and thorough studies is presented in the book "Venomous Animals and their Venoms Vol. III" by Wolfgang Bucheral and Eleanor Buckley. This study has some shocking findings that clearly demonstrate how lethal the Brazilian Wandering spider can actually be.

There is an antidote for the bite of a Banana Spider and was discovered by Carlos Chagas from Brazil.

If you see a spider hiding in a cluster of Bananas, you should move right along and possibly inform the store manager that it may be a Banana Spider!

Answer 2:

First: All spiders are poisonous, as it is part of their eating mechanism / biology.

Second: There are three types of spiders called "Banana Spiders":

  • The Brazilian Walking Spider whose biological name is "Phoneutria spp" (greek for Murderess) is a highly TOXIC spider - in fact it is the most toxic spider in the world as well as being very aggressive (it will willingly attack humans). Normal coloration is sandy brown, with black stripes on the legs and red mandibles.

Found only in South America (Natural Habitat)

  • The Golden Silk Orb-Weaver is native to North America. This is a large spider that is not very aggressive, and while poisonous, is not lethal to humans (in normal health, or susceptible to insect poisons). These are large spiders that are black and yellow normally, some variants to red.
  • The Western Pacific Banana Spider, which is most commonly found in tropical islands such as Okinawa and the Philipeins. It is a moderately large orb weaver with a distinctive, yellow mottled abdomen and is highly venomous. However, they are largely reclusive and are not normally to come into contact with humans unless disturbed.

"Actually not all spiders are venomous as the camel spider's bite doesnt contain venom" is an incorrect edit as camel spiders are not spiders at all and are in fact solifuges. They are arachnids but are in the family 'Solifugae' and not the family 'Araneae' which are the true spiders, all of which are indeed venomous.

On a further note, the term 'poisonous' is usually reserved for plants, animals and fungi that are dangerous when ingested. The term 'venomous' is more appropriate for animals like snakes and spiders that inject their toxin. So, all spiders are venomous, but not necessarily poisonous as many cultures around the world eat them!

Why is there a large zigzag pattern in the middle of the banana spider's web?

Answer by Zaf It's the thread that alerts the spider that dinner has landed. Answer by Imperiex I'd like to point out that the banana spider does not spin a web. You're talking about a common garden spider. Banana spiders, also called Brazilian wandering spiders, are hunters that do not spin webs. Also, they are the MOST venomous spider in the world. It's even in the Guinness Book of World Records as such. Answer by GinezumiAccording to my Master Naturalist training, it also is thought that the pattern alerts birds to the presence of the spider's web. The pattern keeps birds from flying through and therefore keeps the spider from losing food while constantly mending bird damaged-webs.

Do brown recluse spiders die after biting?

No. Who told you that? The bite victim is in danger of dying from it, but the brown recluse is not. Answer: No The recluse does not die. The victim is not necessarily in danger from dying. I've been bitten twice by a recluse and am well alive. Here is what Wiki says: Most bites are minor with no necrosis. However, a small number of bites produce severe dermonecrotic lesions, and, sometimes, severe systemic symptoms. These symptoms can include organ damage, and occasionally even death; most fatalities are in children under 7 or those with a weaker than normal immune system.
