How do you replace the alternator Subaru Outback 1996?

I'm 99% positive that Subaru put the alternators in the same place on all their cars (engineconfiguration. I currently own three subarus: 94 legacy sedan, 96 legacy outback wagon and 09 impreza wrx sedan. All the alternators are in the same spot for all my cars. I'm pretty it's the same case for yours. I was able to remove and reinstall a new one on my 94 sedan in less than 20 minutes. I hope that this help. Here are the steps to removing and installing an alternator on a subaru.

1) Remove the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket or a 10mm wrench. Once the terminal is off tuck it to the side so it does not touch the negative terminal of the battery.

2) Remove the alternator pulley/fan belt cover. On the legacy sedans and outbacks the cover is metal and it covers the top of the fan belts. There are two 10mm bolts that hold this cover in place.

3) Look for a round plug (usually green on subarus) and unplug it from the alternator. Next pull the cap off of the red terminal on the alternator and use a 10mm socket to remove the nut. Once the nut is off pull the cable out from the terminal. The new alternator usually comes with this nut in place but I would still save it just to be safe.

4) Look for the two long bolts that hold the alternator to the brackets attached to the engine. One is to loosen the alternator from the belt (goes up and down). The other bolt holds the alternator in place at the other end. Both these bolts need to come off in order for the alternator to be pulled out.

5) Once the old one is out. Install the new one in reverse order.

How do you tell if your Subaru has a limited slip rear diff?

if it is AWD (all-wheel drive) it has limited slip diff

^^^

Above answer is bad information:

Most Subarus do not have a rear limited slip differential (LSD), but some do. Unless you have an STi or one of the rare older late 80s early 90s sporty Subarus, if you do have any type of limited slip differential it will be a 'viscous' type (VLSD).

Jack up the rear of the car and spin one wheel while you watch how the other wheel spins. A Subaru with an LSD should have both rear wheels spinning in the same direction, but if it has the more common open-differential then one tire will spin in the opposite direction of the other.

Does the Subaru Outback have a fuel light?

By fuel light, I assume you are asking if there is a low fuel warning light. I believe that all years have a low fuel warning light, yes.

Your owner's manual has this information. If you don't have an owner's manual it is highly recommended that you obtain one. There is a wealth of information on driving and caring for your car. Older ones are available on eBay and Subaru offers free manuals for download in .pdf format for model years 2000 and up.

Rough idle and check engine light po301po303 on a 97 subaru legacy outback?

Sure would not idle smoothly with misfires on cylinders 1 and 3.

You likely have a high voltage ignition problem. I'd start with spark plugs and spark plug wires especially if you don't know when the wires and plugs were last replaced.

You may have a defective ignition coil but I'd go with the plugs and wires first. None of these is terribly expensive and you can buy everything after-market for just over $100. As car maintenance items go, these are relatively easy for the home mechanic to replace.

1998 Subaru Outback Why are the emergency brake and battery message lights on?

The alternator is overcharging due to the regulator malfunctioning. Replace the alternator.

1998 Subaru Outback has no power to lighter?

Short of a vague wiring problem there are two(2) high probability causes: 1) the obvious, appropriate fuse, and 2) a cigarette lighter socket fusible safety device. The latter is on the rear of the socket (or built into it), designed to fail and break the current flow (i.e. heating) if the socket gets too hot, as may occur when the plug is held in, or sticks. It also may fail from extensive use, over time. The appropriate fix for the socket failure is to replace the socket, utilizing standard electrical safety practices, and making sure the new socket and "plug" are compatible.

How do you replace timing belt on subaru outback?

Timing belt replacement is not a simple job like replacing a fan belt. It is certainly not a job that you can read about then go do if you have little experience working on a car. I recommend that you purchase a Subaru service manual, like the ones available on eBay for about $10. Take a look at the steps required and judge whether you have the skills and tools for the job.

Where can I find a diagram of a 2005 Subaru Outback differential?

Service manuals for the Legacy Outback on CD are available on eBay for less than $10. I checked the one for my 2007 and it includes the diagram that you seek.

What will a Subaru impreza motor fit in to other then a Subaru impreza?

Depends on which year/model motor you are trying to use and which year/model you are trying to put it into. Subaru's are built like Lego and most parts are interchangeable, problem is there are substantial wiring modifications required for some swaps.

If the high beams are working and the fog lams work the only answer that makes sense is that both low beam bulbs are burned out.

How do you replace the power steering filter on a Subaru Outback?

I found no mention of a power steering filter in the owner's manual or in the service manual for Outback.

How do you determine if awd is working properly on Subaru Outback 2001?

If the AWD has been disabled a light on the dash will indicate "FWD".

Otherwise, if it drives smoothly and gives no indication of a problem, it is working. The Subaru AWD mechanism very seldom fails but when they do there will be no question that something is wrong. Enjoy your car.

How do you replace serpentine belt on 2002 Subaru Outback?

Assuming that you have the H6, because the 4 has vee belts.

Never done one on Subaru but there is a cover called the "collector cover" you have to remove to gain access. Should be just a couple of bolts. From there you locate the belt tensioner, use a wrench pulling clockwise to relieve tension and the belt slips right off. Back on is reverse order. It is the same for any car that has a serpentine belt.

I see the owner's manual recommends this be done by the dealer. Best of luck!

How do you stop the light that surrounds the ignition key from blinking while the engine is running in a 2006 Subaru Outback?

It has something to do with the immobilizer & keyless entry system programming. Take your car to the dealer. He will have to use a special scanner and laptop PC to program.
