Driving a Subaru Outback once (I was borrowing it from a friend), the engine suddenly quit running because it was low on oil. It was a safety mechanism on the car so it wouldn't ruin the engine. I am sure there are plenty of other reasons for it to quit, though.

Info is correct as per Subaru Trouble Code Info P0500. What I would do is disconnect the battery negative post, wait 10 minutes and reconnect post. That will reset the car computer (and bug up your preset radio stations). If problem persist, take your car to a service center to do a diagnostic check. Good luck...

Remove Headlight Housing(2 bolts, 1 screw), rotate plastic cover counterclockwise, remove faulty bulb, install new bulb(Low Beam H1-12V-55W, High Beam HB3 / 9005). Electrify to verify. Re-install plastic cover & Headlight Housing.

Warning: Do not touch the glass part of the halogen bulb. You'll live to regret it...

The 2001 Subaru Outback has different wiper configurations on the Sport vs the Base or Limited - so keep that in mind. You'll need make, model + trim and year to look up the correct replacement blades.

Thermostats are put in cars to regulate coolant flows throughout the engine. The thermostat is closed at cold temperatures so that the coolant can warm up really fast. Thermostats come in different temperature range so a 95 degrees thermostat will open up a lot sooner than one that is 110 degrees. Once the coolant reaches a set temp the thermostat opens to allow the coolant to run through the entire engine to keep it from overheating. At this point the warm/hot coolant also travels to the heater core located inside your cabin to give you heat in the winter. If it takes a very long time for your car to heat up in cold whethers, chances are your thermostat is bad or going bad. It is a good idea to replace the thermostat the same time you do the water pump as the coolant will be drained. Hope this helps.

if its what I'm thinking of it determines the air and fuel mixture needed to keep the car running.

It's inside the fuel tank,attatched to the fuel pump. Look under the back seat for the access to it. I have it in my book, but it doesn't show me where the heck mine is for my 2002 Outback Wagon.

It's the seal on top of the rear light panel (the big one that says subaru across it). Mine started leaking a few years ago and I was concerned about rust and shorting out the brake lights. However, here's a simple fix that seems to last me about a year at a time. Clean the space above the light with rubbing alcohol then fill in a bead of black automotive silicone. To get a better, deeper, skinnier bead, I convince my dentist to give me one of those skinny tipped syringes you would use for cleaning your wisdom teeth craters after having them removed. Fill that with the silicone and get the tip way in there. Don't throw the syringe away, the silicone can be peeled out after it cures.

Changing Subaru brake pads is a relatively simple job but you can mess it up, possibly causing disastrous results. All disc brakes on newer vehicles like yours are basically the same. You have done one you have done them all.

Since you are asking in this forum, I would recommend that you do not try it unless you have someone with you who is experienced in changing disc brake pads and understands what is needed.

The driver's side front window on my 2002 Subaru Outback Sedan no longer seals properly with the gasket at the "A" pillar. At highway speeds this results in an annoying infusion of wind noise. My solution has been to fold up a cardboard coffee cup sleeve (i.e. java jacket or coffee clutch) and jamb it in between the glass and "A" pillar gasket. This crude fix is surprising effective, but has one major drawback. On at least two occasions I've forgotten about my cardboard wedge as I approached a toll booth and have inadvertently littered the highway with it. To avoid this in the future I would welcome any suggestions for a more permanent fix.

Your spark plugs are on the sides of your engine, at the bottom, level with the frame at the bottom of the engine bay.

if you have the H-6 like I do, the last two plugs are shoved way in the back, with only about an inch between them and the frame.

The import repair shop that I called told me that they remove these engines in order to replace spark plugs.

But...

My buddy and I managed to change them using a system like this:

Remove plug cap and rubber "jacket", not so bad, 10mm socket?

insert magnetic spark plug socket

insert socket extension head

insert a horizontal socket wrench that my buddy had, which I've never seen before or since, that is SUPER THIN. Unscrew spark plug until you're running out of room for the wrench

Remove wrench

Keep unscrewing spark plug with the extension arm

remove arm

pull out magnetic socket and spark plug.

You ABSOLUTELY need two people for this.

You can imagine how to get the new ones in there, once you have a system down, its not terrible, but you can see why the shops just remove the whole thing.

Also, the plugs don't look like any you've seen before. Look for a black plastic squarish cap, with an electrical line going to it, attaching with a little "clippy thing", when you pull out the cap, it will bring a red rubber (mine was red) tube with it that sits snugly around the spark plug.

Make sure you have a solid day to get this done.

I think the concept is similar to a more basic car's turn knob. The heater retains the last heat setting used, you're merely switching the fan off. My 2008 does the same.

i don't know if it helps, but my '99 legacy outback was making a knocking sound. turned out that the oring on the brake caliper pin had worn out, and the pin was kind of knocking around.

First of all you will half to get under the car, remove the plastic covers (black plastic pinned in) then it is pretty easy, you just have to twist the plastic unit that is part of the bulb, go to the shop, buy a new one and pop it back in.
