Rats will eat almost anything! Special food pellets, called "lab blocks" have been developed by scientists and are available to pet rat owners, and these are the best thing to feed your rat. Rats shouldn't be given caffeine or too much sugar (too hard on their tiny little systems), peanut butter or other sticky foods (they can't throw up so if it gets caught in their throat they can't get rid of it), or citrus fruits (cause cancer in male rats). Also take care not to give them too many treats because that'll make them fat.
Please note - do not give them raw nuts, uncooked starch foods such as potatoes or yams (steam them first) or iceberg lettuce. These can be toxic to rats. Same for chocolate. Avoid giving them these.
