depends on what engine it is normally for first five hours dont ride over haif throttle, keep the load down and vary your speed, the next 5 hours keep it under three quarter throttle it takes a min of 10 hours to break in a motor some go as far as 15 hours , i would be changing your oil as well after the first 10 hours of use and refill with correct grade and dont overfill remember a carefull run in period will extend the life of the motor up to 3 times longer than a motor that was pushed hard from brand new dont over rev it allow it to slowly bed itself in and youll be rewarded in years to come

If you still have the owner's manual for the 2004 echo there should be a specifications section that will tell you the oil capacity (drain and refill) with a filter change and without a filter change. For instance, I have a 2002 Toyota echo. On page 217 of my owner's manual it shows that the capacity with a filter change is 3.7 liters, 3.9 quarts or 3.3 imperial quarts. I would imagine that the oil capcity of your 2004 echo is similar. After you change the oil and filter add the 3.9 quarts and check the oil level on the dip stick. Also note, my owner manual states that the amount of oil to fill between the low level and the full level on the dipstick is 1.5 liters, 1.6 quarts and 1.3 imperial quarts. It can be many things: dirty air filter, dirty throttle body, bad spark plugs, injectors, fuel pump, old fuel filter, o2 sensor, mass air flow sensor. The load from your air conditioner can also cause sluggishness.

Most of the items mentioned above can be replaced yourself for little cost. Search eBay for lowest prices. My 2000 echo was experiencing sluggishness, I tried almost everything before fixing the problem, which was the fuel filter and pump. I don't know which was the problem, because I replaced them at the same time. Both can be had for around 30 dollars, and they are both part of the same unit, which is inside the fuel tank, and is accessed somewhat easily by pulling up the rear seat cushion (see service manual for details).

A dirty throttle body or worn out mass air flow sensor is really the most likely problem, both are common issues for an echo with more than 100,000 miles. The throttle body can be easily cleaned yourself, mass airflow sensor is also easily replaced.

M.I.L. "ON" DTC P1349 - VVTi ACTUATOR

Under certain conditions customers may experience a MIL "ON" condition with DTC P1349 indicating a variable valve timing (VVTi) malfunction. In some cases, the cause of this DTC may be the VVTi actuator.

It looks like they replaced the camshaft/camshaft timing sprocket.

If that isn't it, then in general P1349 is a misfire or ignition issue under most general OBD-II - but Toyota spec'd OBD-II has it as a VVT malfunction. Unfortunantly - hard to tell which it is. Might be the ignition timing set too advanced (VVT-i issue) or low fuel pressure (bad or clogged injector, bad or low flowing fuel pump/regulator). An emissions test could tell you which one it is. If you want to try a quick fix on your own, I'd start with the basics, change the spark plugs, air filter, and maybe the pcv valve, all these are cheap and easy. Other things could cause the problem though, so if the quick fixes don't work, I'd lean toward the injectors.

Seafoam and other additives are very good solvents that can help clean the injectors - but may not be strong enough to clean off these injectors. Injector cleaning services generally don't work that well - best way is to have these cleaned ultrasonically or replaced (very costly).

Turn on ac and watch clutch on front of ac compressor. If clutch doesn't engage then AC relay is bad. Or you can follow the schematic on the side of the relay and use a volt meter to test it.

See related link. It could be any number of things, you need to run some tests. Could be as simple as a blown fuse. Low pressure is probably most common. You may or may not have a leak that needs fixed (could be caused by a worn o-ring / gasket). Worst case you need a new compressor. You can buy a cheap gauge from harbor freight or take it to a professional.

The lighter fuse of a Toyota Matrix is located under the driver side dash of the vehicle. It is the 15 amp fuse in slot 1.
