Fonts aren't actually added to Office. Instead, they are added to the computer in general for use in other programs such as Wordpad or WordPerfect. There are a number of website where you can preview and download fonts such as http://www.1001freefonts.com/ All you have to do is preview the font, save it to your computer and unzip it (Windows XP can do this without additional software, older versions of Windows may require that you download WinZip at http://www.winzip.com--It's FREE!) After the file is unzipped/no longer compressed you just need to move the font file (ends in .TTF usually) to your Font folder. To find your Font folder, go to My Computer-->Hard drive where Windows is installed (usually C:)-->Windows folder-->Font folder. All you have to do is copy and paste the .TTF file to this folder. It may sound a little complicated, but once you do it a few times it becomes easier. It's also possible to pay for groups of fonts that you can install all at once. A font is a style of typeface such as Helvetica or Courier.

Points describe the size of the font. The definition has changed but usually there are 72 points to the inch. This distance is often used to measure the approximate height of the font with room to spare. Typically the vertical distance from the top of a capital G to the bottom of a lower case g plus a small gap.

Smart font is a font that responds to key entry in a complex way. These fonts use OpenType technology developed by Microsoft and Adobe extending Apple’s TrueType font technology. A smart font has programming that responds to data entry made according to a phonetic transcription of a language, a method useful for languages that have multiple, and often combined letters (ligatures) made from its syllables.

Creating an outline of a font is useful for many things, one being the document can be viewed on a computer that does not have the font. Once the font has been outlined it is art and no longer text. The best way to use this feature is to save an .ai file that is text, then after outlining save as a different name, creating 2 files, or keep text on a separate layer in the outline file.

You may need to restart the application after activating the font in font book. Another reason could be too many fonts are turned on, or activated.

It seems to me that it is a reference to a bye-gone era when printing presses used by newspapers and such were operated by manually laying the letters out before the printing began. I think the same term applies today to preparing a text for printing using a computer. The term as used today refers to the preparation of text and includes making informed choices of typeface, point size and leading to enhance the readability and message.

The logo for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is hand-lettered, not a font. However, it is similar to LD Frightmares (Lettering Delights) and Alicia Wonderland (FontSpace).

Medieval writing was highly varied, and you really have to know what effect you want. Several fonts are based on it.

Blackletter fonts, which were popular in German and England, gave rise to Old English. I don't particularly like this font, which is really a nineteenth century adaptation, and there are others I like better, but Old English is fairly well known and available.

The original printing fonts used in Italy were based on Spanish longhand and Italian hand printing styles. The Roman alphabet of Nicolas Jensen is a good example, if you can find it. The Italic of Aldus Manutius is another. The Italic, by the way, did not originally have capital letters, but used small capitals like those from Jensen's font instead. They were only a bit taller than the lower cases letters without ascenders (such as 'm' or 'n') and were a distinctly shorter than the lower case letters without ascenders (such as 'h' and 'k'). These fonts, Roman and Italic, are probably too much like ordinary modern book fonts to be appealing.

There is a style called uncial or semi uncial that is a copy of Irish writing of the Early Middle Ages. It is ancestral to our lower case. You might find uncial and semi uncial alphabets.

An interesting calligraphic alphabet called LeGriffe might be appealing. I do not think of medieval times when I see it, but it might do for what you want.
