$125 FOR AN ULTRASOUND IS RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP! i have been a tech for a few years and seen maybe cheapest I've seen has been $250 ... most of the time the equipment is very expensive and therefore most clinics have an outside or "traveling" ultrasonographer come in. Not to mention that ultrasound interpretation is extremely difficult, sometimes if it were my pet i would spend the extra to have an ultrasonographer who does this on a day to day basis to diagnose or interpret what images are been seen. If your vet recommends it, there has got to be a reason why. Foreign body? Mass? cancer? etc etc. In other words better safe than sorry The vet that I called said it was $125. ouch

When figuring the due date by a sonogram, the doctor will measure the crown-rump length (CRL).

The length of the embryo on the longest axis constitutes the crown-rump length. This is actually considered to be the best parameters to date the embryo. The accuracy of it is plus or minus 3 to 5 days.

A rough rule of thumb is that CRL + 6.5 = Menstrual Age in Weeks.

That said, it doesn't matter what week the sonogram is taken to determine its accuracy, because it is based on the CRL measurement of the fetus. No matter what the length is (because it was done on different weeks of gestation) is will directly relate to the week of gestation and ultimately determine the EDD (estimated date of delivery). The EDD is just that, and educated guestimate (guess/estimate) and is not meant to be written in stone.

When the due date has been set by an accurately measured CRL, it shouldn't be changed by a subsequent scan. If another scan done 6 to 8 weeks later says that you should have a new due date that is further away, they should not normally change the date. Instead, they should interpret this finding as that the baby is not growing at the expected rate.

After more testing has been done to determine whether the baby is growing properly and there is no other cause for concern, then it is feasible that perhaps the original measurement of the CRL wasn't properly measured by the person operating the sonogram. In this case, the new date is the actual date (considering the new measurement had been measured properly).

Keep in mind, however, when trying to figure your conception date that a full term pregnancy is considered to be 38-42 weeks, and that the accuracy of the sonogram being plus or minus 3-5 days. The date you actually give birth is directly related to the CRL and other factors of development of the fetus. Also, an egg doesn't become fertilized and implanted immediately after ejaculation. It can take up to 72 hours post-sex before that happens.

By taking the due date you have been given, count back 40 weeks. The date you get is only a rough estimate of the date of conception. It could be off by about one week. The day you recall having sex should be within that week, either before or after the date you counted back to.

Please note: This really gives you a two week timespan. Example: If the conception date you come up with is May 10 and you know you did not have sex that day, you could have potentially conceived that day (but that is kind of beside the point for the moment). I admit that i am not an Obstetrician but my basic medical training has equipped me fairly well enough to answer this one. Doctors employ a variety of methods to ascertain the gestational age of the fetus or the duration of pregnancy. (These terms are often used interchangeably although in some circumstances, they may convey slightly different meanings.) Traditionally, the duration of pregnancy is calculated from the date of the last menstrual period (LMP.) Once the diagnosis of pregnancy is established by whatever reliable means, the duration of pregnancy is calculated by simply counting the days from the first day of the last menstrual period. For a woman with regular menstrual cycles or one who keeps track with a calender, getting an accurate date may not pose a problem. For many others only an approximate value can be obtained by this method. A pitfall with this method is the fact that some pregnant women may actually bleed in the early months of an otherwise uneventful pregnancy and mistake this often ominous sign for her regular menses. Thus the calculations may be inaccurate by as much as two months. Clinicians also rely on their findings on physical examination. The uterus increases in size at a fairly predictable rate during pregnancy. The fundus, or the top of the uterus can be felt the level of the pelvic brim (bony ridge at the lower abdomen) at thirteen weeks (approximately three months) of pregnancy. The fundus then rises approximately one centimeter with each passing week. It reaches the umbilicus at roughly twenty eight weeks and the lower margin of the rib cage at thirty six. It then drops slightly over the next two weeks as the fetus descends into the pelvis. These methods may seen crude and unsophisticated but are surprisingly quite reliable regardless of the mothers physical stature and afford a quick and easy means of crosschecking calculated values with estimates from physical examination (provided you have a single fetus; with twins and triplets all calculations are off.) Ultrasound scans have long since revolutionized the monitoring of pregnancy. The ultrasound creates an image of internal parts as high frequency sound waves are reflected from tissue surfaces. The ultrasound scan can detect the gestational sac(or sacs), its location, size, the fetal heart beat (in viable pregnancies), the fetal size, location of the placenta etc etc. The ultrasound scan is considered fairly safe although its use is not without problems. Using the ultrasound scan, the clinician can record the dimensions of particular fetal structures at different stages of pregnancy eg. Crown rump length, biparietal diameter, femur length,etc (body length, head size, leg length respectively.) These values are compared with tables and graphs obtained from studies of fetuses in many pregnancies that were accurately dated to obtain the duration of the pregnancy in question. The values thus obtained are more accurate the earlier on in pregnancy they are obtained because of the smaller margin of associated error. As pregnancy progresses the estimated range widens. Every year the chance of pregnancy goes up a little but usually it's the longer you have had it done they are more likely to until (after about 10 years) if you suspect you are pregnant you should see your doctor because normally the pregnancy will have to be terminated because it is a "tubal" pregnancy where the baby implants in your tubes instead of your uterus. Yes you could be pregnant. Do a pregnancy test and see your doctor for a blood test.

I went for my ultrasound today. I am 7 weeks 4 days. I was told a normal fetal heart beat would be 120-180. My ultrasound showed a heart rate of 142. My friend told me that hers was 140. Hope I helped. Keep praying. Shaun
