Ghost exists but at that time the belief was stronger than now. More unknowns mean you have a more difficult time explaining why things happen. We don't like leaving things unknown, so perhaps people in the 19th century were more inclined to accept a supernatural explanation because they didn't have the understanding for a perfectly logical explanation.
