Where is the thermastat on a 2000 Volvo S40?
The thermostat housing is located on top of the engine, of passenger side where the top radiator hose is clamped.
If you want to change it,
Drain coolant enough to at least empty pressure at top radiator hose. Save coolant in a container. Use a T-40 torx drive socket to remove the two bolts, be careful you don't damage threads. Remove the housing then remove old thermostat. I recommend replacing coolant temp sensor at same time, it is located underneath thermostat and is threaded into the thermostat housing. Both parts together will cost about $80-85 from your Volvo dealer. (Volvo Thermostat part # 271664, Volvo Coolant Temp. Sensor/IAT Sensor part # 9125463)
Use sealant (Water Pump & Thermostat Housing RTV Silicone, cost around $3) around match surfaces of housing with new thermostat in place. Carefully seat the housing and carefully thread the mounting bolts to seat the housing. When a little sealant escapes around the edges and bolts are tight STOP, do NOT over tighten. It doesn't have to be torqued on there the sealant will heal around the surfaces and bond the mount in place.
Reconnect sensor and reconnect top hose.
If you are going to drain the system, remove radiator drain plug it's located there at the passenger side of radiator and refill system.
Test for leaks Your done.
Tools needed:
Flat blade screwdriver (to remove hose clamps)
Socket wrench
T-40 torx drive socket
19mm open end wrench (to remove Coolant Temp. Sensor)
Drain Pan (to catch spilling coolant)
50/50 water/coolant (optional, if you are going to change coolant)
Why won't the hazard lights turn off on your 2003 s40 Volvo?
The switch is defective (common---mine is doing the same thing). Emergency fix== pull the 15 amp fuse, but this disables turn signals. Turn signals will work if u hold down the haz. lt . switch at the same time u signal, but buy a new haz. switch, have it installed (too difficult for the avg. driver), re-install 15 amp fuse, and be done with it.
How do you check transmission fluid on a 2006 Volvo s40?
If it is like the XC70, it is HIDDEN.
Look drivers side, behind radiator), below airbox & hoses.

On S40 2.4i LHD it's passenger side (close to middle) between radiator and engine. Not easy to access as cables are in the way. Long nose pliers will help.
You cant push the piston on your rear brakes back in on my 02 Volvo s40?
Sounds like a siezed piston. This occurs typically from two causes. Either the piston is not aligned perfectly with the cylinder bore or there is corrosion on the cylinder walls behind the piston preventing it from going into the bore.
Brake fluid is hydoscopic, meaning it attracts & absorbs water. If the fluid is not changed at the recommended intervals, any moisture in the fluid will cause corrosion in the brake lines, cylinders, etc. The solution is to remove and rebuild or replace the caliper. A flush of the brake fluid would also be prudent.
The rear brakes on your '02 s40 are slightly different from the front. On the front, you can press the piston in. On the rear, the piston needs to be screwed in. Notice the slot going across the head of the piston? There is a special tool that looks like a small block and sits on top of piston and a small piece sets in the slot as the block sits on the piston. Turn clockwise to press in. You can use pliers of some sort but need to be careful because you can rip the rubber. You need to turn the piston in clockwise direction to push in the piston

I used this procedure to reset my 2002 s40 services light (it should work for 2008 s40 also).
a) insert ignition key and turn it to the 1st click - no lights on bottom of the instrument panel should be light up
b) press and hold trip odometer reset button, and turn the ignition key to the 2nd click - the row of lights at the bottom of the instrument panel should come on
c) after about 5 secs the lights should go off except the Service reset light - it will blink
d) when the Service reset light has blinked for about 3 times - release the odometer reset button
e) the Service reset is complete
Note: This procedure cannot be used to reset Check Engine light - it requires an OBD2 code reader.
I have it done, at my local car wash / oil change joint for $29.95, and they toss in a full service car wash! They take $5 off when I bring my own MB brand filter - which I sometimes do, just because.... Umm, that's great if you don't want your engine to last. MB spec is full synthetic oil which is even more crucial if your engine is a Kompressor. Using a top quality OE oil filter is a must in this Mechanic's opinion. Expect to spend $180 and up for a quality service. Yes, you CAN spend less but engines for MBs aren't cheap!
$180? That ought to be a lot more than just an oil change. 6 qts of full synthetic (Mercedes Benz approved) oil ought to cost $50 or so. The manual may call for 8.5, but that will almost always overfill the engine. Even so, 9 qts = $72. Filter from the dealer, no discount, full retail should be at most $20. so were still under $100. So over $80 in labor/disposal (quite possibly double the cost) for an oil change because of the logo on the car? Its not like its really hard to do because its a MB. That's do it yourself territory. If you really don't want to do it yourself, get an estimate for it (on an invoice) and look at what they are charging you for. I would point out that my 1998 came from factory with, and MB book says natural is fine. Look at your manual and see if a natural, with the much more frequent changes is acceptable for the later models.

Where is the oil filter on a 2005 Volvo xc 90?
Right front bottom corner of the engine block. It is in a black plastic canister that unscrews and the filter cartridge is inside. where can I locate the oil filter?
Where is the oil filter on a 2005 Volvo s40?
Under the hood, under a plastic cap with a 36mm plastic nut by the belts.
Lift the hood and notice an air intake hose on your left at the front that looks like an attachment to a shop vac. You need to remove this along with the plastic piece it is connected to that sits directly behind it. You'll need a 10mm socket. Once you've removed the plastic hoses you'll see the oil filter housing on the engine block. It has a plastic cap and requires a 36mm socket to remove it. If the cap is stuck, don't try to force the cap off with channel locks or a wrench. You'll crack the housing and be pretty upset. Use the socket and you should have no problems.
