How do sandstorm become sandstorms?
"Sand tornadoes" are more properly called dust devils because they are not truly tornadoes. Most heat in the atmosphere comes from the sun heating the ground which transfers heat to the air. The winds and updraft then lift dust and sand into the air, forming a dust devil.
