No. The PS3 can only have a wired connection with an ethernet cable. The only other connection that is possible is WiFi. The PS3 can only connect to the internet with WiFi or ethernet cable no other type connection is possible. You can not use the HDMI or USB port to connect the PS3 to the internet. I do not believe a router can be connected to the internet cable without a modem or that you can have cable internet without a modem

You really don't need a wifi hotspot for file sharing. If you are using Windows 7 or 8 you create an ad-hoc wireless network. In this case, one of the computers will turn in to a server and the other, a client. Don't get confused, nothing happens to your computers. Go to control panel -> Network and internet -> Network and sharing center -> Set up a new connection or network

If this method doesn't work, you can open command prompt under admin privileges. Then type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid= key=
Note that these commands must be typed in the laptop which you wanna turn into a server.
Then in the other laptop, this wireless connection must show up. All you gotta do now is to click "connect"
In the server computer, to "STOP" the hostednetwork, you should type the following command
netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

What worked for me was to use Win XP to automatically generate an encryption key and password that I then pasted into my Lynksys WRT54G router when prompted. That made my wi-fi access point secure with WPA2 encryption.
Until you do what precedes, I suggest that you at least disable public broadcasting by your router as follows: use your browser to access your router at 192.168.1.1 (the Linksys default address) and password "admin" (also their default password); then on the menu click on the Wireless tab; then put a checkmark next to "Disable public broadacasting."
What did absolutely NOT WORK were any of Linksys' "Secure Easy Setup" or their printed instructions or their totally useless "remote setup session" for which they charged me $9.99 and never even called me back as promised after a first "technician" screwed up my initial setup that was fine except that it had no encryption.

You should be able to check how many computers are connected to your router, in the router settings. Most likely you can find it in "Status" for wireless network or for all networks. You check MAC addresses for all your computers connected to the router and compare it with those in the list. In that way you know if you have some "guests". You find out who connected to your router will be much harder and require special software and training.
PS: you can use MAC filter to block "guests".
