Chiropractic

Chiropractic is from Greek words meaning done by hand. It is a system of healing or therapy that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. The method of treatment commonly involves manipulation of the spinal column and other body structures. It is grounded in the principle that the body can heal itself when the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems are all functioning properly.

Who manages chiropractors?

Chiropractors are autonomous health care providers whose practice does not require the supervision or management of a physician.

Chiropractors are regulated by the laws of the state in which they practice, as well as by the rules of their state chiropractic board.

Does chiropractic medicine improve speech delays?

While chiropractic care can improve many types of conditions, this particular problem is best left to another type of conservative practitioner: A speech therapist. Speech therapists can give exercises to improve the neurological motor control of the speech pathways. Speech is a very complex coordination between brain signals controlling structures such as the vocal cords, the tongue, the soft palate, lips, accessory respiration muscles, the larynx and pharynx, and the diaphragm. This coordination can be improved, refined, and solidified with exercises. Chiropractic care does influence the cranial nerve and brain function when there is a “soft” neurological lesion. In my practice, I can provide an adjustment to the upper neck and see changes in the size of the pupils, the way the eyes move, the jaw joint, and even, yes, the soft palate. Some studies have shown improvement in dizziness and vision. Other studies show benefit from chiropractic care with migraine headaches. One study shows improvement in cognition with exercises where letters are flashed on a screen, and respondents are to decide if they were flashed backwards, forwards, or upside down; neck adjustments improved the score. I’ve seen the results of brain scans before and after an adjustment, showing increased activity. So, it’s possible to see changes, but it seems to be an indirect way to stimulate the brain area. I would prefer a direct therapy for the specific speech disorder, however I would be under chiropractic care anyway for the other manifold and multitude of benefits.

Your back hurts badly when pressure or weight is applied to your chest How do you fix this?

This sounds like an issue with the costovertebral or costotransverse joint (where the ribs articulate with the vertebrae). A visit to an osteopathic or chiropractic physician would be advisable to ensure that it is nothing more serious. If the problem is, as I presume, a costovertebral issue, you are a great candidate for spinal manipulation, and a single adjustment will likely resolve your pain. Traditionally, this kind of problem has been referred to as having a "rib out", but it is more likely a spasm of a levator costorum muscle or possible a more superficial muscle that interconnects the spine and ribs.

Is Schmorl's nodes a disability?

No, schmorl's nodes do not usually have any clinical manifestation at all. They are usually just found on x-ray or MRI when a doctor is checking out something completely unrelated.

Define Modern Chiropractic?

Modern Chiropractic is not officially defined, however, if it were, it would incorporate modern thinking; the germ theory, evidence based care, and the use of medication in the treatment of disease, and dis-ease.

Modern Chiropractic would help those in need. It would implement a little East meets West approach. Western Medicine meets Eastern Philosophy. This unique approach has a name: Integrative Medicine. It integrates the best of all the fields of medicine to give the best results (evidence based) of recovery and healing. An integrative approach is simply this: natural methods first; medicine/drugs second; and surgery last -- or all three used concurrently if your conditions dictates that approach. Western Medicine typically does not use the natural method first; time constraints, innate powers of the body, and use of natural methods are not backed by the allopathic profession, and often go unappreciated.

Modern Chiropractic might prescribe medication, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, LASER, body-work, exercise, diet intervention, nutrition, supplements, botanicals, herbs, acupressure, acupuncture, prolotherapy, and trigger point injections for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Modern Chiropractic would use protocols that are tested and backed by research.

Traditional Chiropractic has a drug-free approach to wellness and typically does not condone the use of surgery. However, chiropractic has evolved over the last century. Although the term modern chiropractic is not mainstream, it won't be long before it is an accepted method of treatment amongst bodyworkers and manual medicine practitioners. It simply integrates all the best fields of medicine to get you out of pain; feeling better and staying healthy.

Should you see a chiropractor for heriated disc after an injection in your back?

I am a chiropractor and I think having an injection would have little bearing on seeing or not seeing a chiropractor for back pain. I doubt that spinal manipulation would aggravate your herniated disc but if you would like to make yourself feel better about your decision you can consult with the medical doctor who gave you the injection. Also chiropractors can do other treatments besides spinal manipulation for back pain.

Chiropractors are Licensed Pain Killers?

If you have ever suffered from severe lower back pain, you know that’s not the time to question whether or not chiropractors are considered real doctors while you rush to make an appointment.

Over the years the practice of chiropractic has increased dramatically across the nation and it continues to do so. Chiropractors are Doctors of Chiropractic, not medical doctors. Chiropractic treatments have become much more helpful and sophisticated in the last few decades.

Chiropractors are licensed by individual states and the regulations vary. Each chiropractor must be licensed, and this entails two to four years of undergraduate study and the successful completion of a four-year chiropractic college course. Each candidate must pass state and national examinations.

Some states allow chiropractors to obtain a license from another state without additional examinations; they qualify through their educational and examination background.

The practice of chiropractic is expected to increase more rapidly than most professions during the next decade. This is due primarily to the public’s demand for noninvasive treatment for back pain and other problems attributed to spinal disorders.

Chiropractors deal with many different kinds of pain, but their main focus is with discomfort caused by dislocation of the spine. Spinal joint misalignments cause problems and pain in the nervous system and chiropractors can usually alleviate the suffering through manual manipulation of the spine.

Doctors of Chiropractic do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, which is a welcome relief for the patients. Chiropractors have other treatment procedures besides manual manipulation, which include the following:

• They use therapies that include heat, ultrasound, electric currents, and heat.

• Chiropractors often give their patients advice about nutrition, exercise, stress management, and positive changes in an unhealthy lifestyle.

The practice of chiropractic has become widely accepted among the American public; this acceptance has increased significantly during the past three decades. Chiropractors help their patients in many ways, but these doctors are most closely associated with the excruciating pain caused by a lower back in disarray.

With improved technology and treatment, the practice of chiropractic is increasing and here to stay.

Does having adjustments help with breathing problems?

Adjustments, more commonly known as spinal manipulation, may be able to help some breathing problems. The biggest determinant will be what is causing the breathing problems.

Spinal manipulation can increase the mobility of the thoracic spine and ribs which can make breathing easier. Also, manipulation may increase the function of muscles involved in breathing, again, making breathing easier. However, spinal manipulation has not been shown with scientific research to affect airway obstructions caused by asthma, allergies, emphysema, etc. Thus, if your breathing problems are purely mechanical (rib or spine dysfunction) then spinal manipulation will likely help 100%. If your breathing problems are caused by a conditions such as asthma, the spinal manipulation may make breathing a bit easier and improve quality of life, but it will not solve your problems...you will still need medical care.

Thomas Edison said: "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."

Is a broken leg emergency surgery?

- If the fracture is open (the bone is breaking out through your skin) then yes, you should go to emergency for fast surgery.

- If you have broken your femur (really big bone in your thigh) then you have probably been in a bad accident with major trauma, so there are probably many reasons it is an emergency.

- For a simple closed fracture (no bone sticking through the skin) of your leg below the knee, it is likely not going to need surgery, just a cast, but you should still go to the emergency room of your local hospital.

What could it mean if your neck pops all the time a horrible headache tunnel vision when you stand up light headedness and pain all the way down your back?

If all of these symptoms are ocurring together everytime you stand up, then I would visit a medical doctor for a checkup. However, if these symptoms are ocurring seperately then there are a few possible causes:

Your neck popping all the time is likely just a bit of instability in the cervical spine, do you have poor posture or sit for long periods? Do you exercise regularly?

The light headedness and tunnel vision after standing up is called orthostatic hypotension. If it is severe (you pass out everytime you stand up) you should visit your medical doctor. If it is only mild and occassionally, then dont worry about it..it happens to all of us.

Pain down your back could again be related to poor posture or spinal instability. Do you exercise regularly? It could also be many other causes...visit a chiropractor for a complete exam and diagnosis.
