The show you're thinking of MAY be "The Imagination Station with Mark Kistler." It's been YEARS since I saw it last but I know Mark in person, and while I haven't seen him in years either, I remember him always telling his students to draw, draw, draw and shade, shade, shade!

I am pritysure it was the yellow smiely face kooky pen it was yellow with black string on top and it had no name it had a basic smiely face like this- ( on the smiely bee just elimanate the body and antenas and that's it basicly).

Object drawing, or still-life drawing, is when you take an object, put it directly in front of you, and draw it as accurately to real-life as you can.
