Relationships with customers

Keep track of the details they share with you. For example, a successful florist will keep a list of their clients with the birthday and anniversary dates of their friends and family that the client has offered to share. An excellent florist will be able to extrapolate other important events that are coming up like their daughter's graduation and be prepared to offer helpful suggestions.

Relationships with colleagues

Each person's idea of where to draw the line in the sand for how much to share with others at work is different and depends on how comfortable you are with sharing your personal life. In trying to find the right fit for you, don't forget that jobs are not 'forever' and you can't take back what you have shared once it has been revealed. For example: There is no guarantee that what you tell one person in the office isn't going to be passed around. If you don't plan on being with a company for more than three years then you should take that into consideration before you are tempted to tell them about personal details. Otherwise, you may find that your personal information has been left behind with people who have no reason to protect it. Remember - it's just a job. That said, it is important to find the balance between being a friendly team player that is fun to work with and being a professional that doesn't let their personal details interfere with work.

The Boss

Your supervisor will learn more about you than the rest of the staff because your boss knows about your requests for days off to look after your kids, or for religious observations, or that operation you had which kept you home for a week but you told everyone you had the flu... You get the picture. The worker-boss relationship is built on trust and performance. Never forget that your boss wants maximum productivity while you want maximum pay, benefits and advancement. Your boss is going to try to get the most performance out of you, that's their job. You have to decide what you are willing to sacrifice and what rewards will justify these sacrifices.
