If you are young and still dependent on your family and they are homophobic then it may not be appropriate to tell them at all, or not just yet anyway. Unfortunately there are still families who will completely reject a gay child, even throwing them out on the street, rather than confronting their own fears. When a sense of family cohesion and solidarity has been built up over many years by treating other people as weird outsiders, then it is unrealistic to expect those ingrained attitudes to change overnight. Do not come out now if you feel you would put yourself at risk by doing so.

However, if you feel that coming out is important then I suggest you speak alone with the most sympathetic person in your family - it may be your mother (mother's often say they have known all along) or it may be a brother or sister you are close to or an aunt or grandparent. Part of this would be withdrawing your energy from supporting your own family's homophobia - don't laugh at their jokes, perhaps quietly leave the room, decline invitations to visit family members whose behaviour is distasteful. Ask the joke-maker how come they know so much about gay people. Remark that people often use humour to mask their own fear or nervouseness about an issue.
