Most Christian denomiations celebrate Maundy (or Holy) Thursday. The feast of Maundy (or Holy) Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) at the Last Supper. The word "maundy" comes from the Latin word mandatum (commandment) which is the first word that Jesus spoke to His apostles after He washed their feet (John 13:34):

• "Mandátum novum do vobis dicit Dóminus, ut diligátis ínvicem, sicut diléxi vos."

• "I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you." The biblical the events of the first Holy Thursday were:

• The eating of the Easter lamb or the paschal meal

• The washing of the disciple's feet

• The institution of the Most Holy Eucharist

. • The first Mass at which Jesus Christ is the eternal high priest

. • The first Communion of the apostles

. • The first conferring of Holy Orders

• The foretelling of Judas' betrayal and Peter's denials

• The farewell discourse and priestly prayer of Jesus

• The agony and capture of Jesus in the Garden of Olives In the Catholic Church, there are two Masses on Holy Thursday. • The Bishop celebrates the Chrism Mass early in the day where the sacramental oils are blessed and distributed to each parish. • Then the Evening Mass of Lord's Supper is celebrated in each parish.

Is holy Thursday the day of the last supper?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Maunday Thursday is one of the celebrations during Holy Week that may include foot washing and/or the partaking of the Last Supper. The order of worship is adapted from the Holy Bible and can be found in these scriptures: Matthew 26:20-30; Mark 14:17-26; Luke 22:7-38; and John 13. The Last Supper, however, is one of the ordinances observed quite frequently in the Christian faith throughout the year as it is a remembrance of the body and blood of Jesus Christ that was sacrificed for the remission of sin. What separates Maunday Thursday from the observation of the Last Supper is the foot washing, however, it is not uncommon to include the elements of the Eucharist. The order of service is commonly coordinated by the pastor, priest, or leaders of the Christian church. The term Maunday is derived from the latin term "Mandatum" which is included in the latin statement, "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" which means, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as i have loved you." Maunday is a reflection of the second greatest commandment that can be found in Matthew 22:39, "Love your neighbor as yourself." This great command is what the Disciples of Christ are commissioned to do and it is a sign of a true follower of Jesus Christ. In the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) it is told that the disciples were asking who was the greatest among them and Jesus Christ indicated that because they are called to serve they would be considered the least. Therefore, Jesus Christ washed the feet of his disciples so as to set an example of servitude and to teach them the true meaning of humility.

What happens in mass on holy Thursday?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Roman Catholic AnswerOn Holy Thursday, the night before His Crucifixion, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, the Sacrifice of the Mass, and the sacrament of the priesthood; all at the Last Supper.

In addition to this, according to John's Gospel Jesus did to other remarkable things. First, he profoundly demonstrated to his disciples that real leadership involves humility and service. To show this, he washed his disciples' feet - a task normally reserved for the lowest of slaves - and commanded them to serve one another humbly. Secondly he breathed the Holy Spirit on them, and commanded them to love one another as he loved them, so that in the future Chistians could be identified by the love they shared one with another.

What is the similarity between Ramadan and lent?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are no obvious similarities between Hanukkah and Ramadan besides for the coincidence that Ramadan is the ninth month on the Muslim calendar and Hanukkah happens during the 9th month (called Kislev) on the Jewish calendar. Hanukkah is an eight-day minorJewish festival occurring in December during which Jews light candles every evening. Some extra prayers are added to the daily prayers. It's customary to eat certain foods. Ramadan is the Holiest Muslim monthduring which Muslims fast all month during the day. It happens every 12 lunar months and therefor can fall out anytime during the year; each year it starts about 11 days earlier than the previous year (on the "solar" calendar.)

Can you eat chicken on Good Friday?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You can't eat meat on Good Friday, but you only eat fish instead. But some say This is the kind of nonsense that makes Protestants laugh at Catholics. The Bible CLEARLY says that we are free to fast or not fast, eat meat or not eat meat, as we please. IT CLEARLY says that these kinds of "religious practices" are worthless and that God sees "good works" as nothing but "filthy rags."

Follow Jesus. Give Him your heart. That's all that counts. These kinds of questions reflect the kind of dead useless "religiosity" that Jesus came to ABOLISH!

What did the Good Friday Agreement do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Good Friday agreement is working because both sides in the conflict have realized that they must work together, for their own future and that of generations to come. There is no future from guns or bombs, only pain and suffering. However, there is much more to be done, or the flame of hope could yet fail. As I write, there is still Hate on the streets in Northern Ireland, Churches have been damaged, Orange lodges have been burnt to the ground, or wrecked. Those who will be marching on Monday next, (13th this year, because the 12th is on a Sunday) must respect the other side who fear these marches, and the Nationalists must respect the Unionist tradition. The Good Friday agreement was voted on by all the people of Ireland, the first time since the 1918 general election when the majority voted for independence. Both sides in Ireland ( the whole island) are drawing closer together, and working together. The UK government needs to support this, and all governments in the Celtic Isles, Britain and Ireland must work together for all the people of these islands. The Belfast agreement is not an end, it is just a beginning, and needs the Prayers and Support of all of us.

What happens if you eat only one meal a day?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

youd probably be starving .. but wont die .. but you probably would actually most definitly be under weight -- Eating only one meal a day is very bad for your body and no, you wouldn't just be underweight, some people actually become overweight because of it. You body goes into starvation mode, it will retain all of the fat for later... see it knows it won't be fed again for a long time so it stores as much as it can for later. You should eat mini-meals several times a day. This is hard the first two weeks or so but it gets easier and your metabolism will start to kick in and the pounds will start to drop off. The key is eating healthy meals!

What do we do in lent?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Lent it not only celebrated as individual humans but in the church as well.Generally during the season of lent you should notice a change of color in thr robes the priest wear during church. Most of the hymes you sing during the sermen contain the word "Alleluia". During the season of lent the priest will stop saying alleluia. After the breaking of the bread the priest only says christ our lord is sacrified for us instead of singing a song because that song contains alleluia. There are many more subtle changes that i have failed to noticebut i know they are there.
