In 1858, the Universal Suez Ship Canal Company was formed and given the right to begin construction of the canal and operate it for 99 years, after which time, the Egyptian government would take over control of the canal. At its founding, the Universal Suez Ship Canal Company was owned by French and Egyptian interests.

Colombia did not have a good army or navy so they werent able to do anything about it. Now in control, Teddy started building the canal. he never cared about helping make panama indepemdent, all the US wanted was money. So yeah, we stole it from colombia. And then, to be "benevolent" and to "compensate" for colombias's loss, we gave them about $25 million. Panama had never thiught of revolting until we stepped in eith selfish intentions. and Colombia never wanted to give it up, but they were too weak. so basically, yeah we stole the canal from Colombia
