Athenians believed that a good citizen had a sharp mind and healthy body. So education meant physical training as well as book learning. Until age 6 or 7, boys were taught at home by mothers or male slaves. From age 6 to 14, boys went to school. Teachers taught reading, writing, arithmetic, and literature. Books were rare and very expensive, so subjects were read out loud and the boys had to memorize everything. To help them learn, they used writing tablets. Coaches taught sports such as Wrestling and gymnastics to strengthen students muscles. Boys also studied music. They learned to sing and to play the lyre.

At 18, Athenian men began their military training. After their service, wealthy young men might study with private teachers. These teachers charged high fees for lessons in debate and public speaking that would help young men become political leaders.

Unlike boys, most girls did not learn to read or write. Girls grew up helping their mothers around the house. They were taught to cook, clean, spin thread, and weave cloth. Some also learned ancient secret songs and dances for religious festivals. Girls usually married around the age of 15. Those from wealthy families married men chosen by their fathers. Girls from poor families often had more choice.

They also didn't have just one leader, they all had their independence and helped each other during times of needs and also killed each other. But the Greek City States fell after the Romans started expanding east. Since Greek warfare was based on Phalanx which was a large block of men making a wall of "spears and men".

As the previous person said, Two years old. But, be warned, to not ride the horse too much. Have you ever seen a horse that the back has a very dipped back? That is a sway-backed horse, and that is caused when a horse is rode for too long when she/he is young. So don't overwork the horse ;)

2! That's bloody ridiculous, they would be way to young then there backs underdeveloped and in the future your horse/pony would probably have problems with there legs! But it depends on your horse, if they have filled out enough by 2 (which I doubt) then you could have a light weight rider sat on there back, but no way in hell would i ride them. My rising 2 year old hasn't filled out well at all, but my plan always was to start riding him @ 4 and have a light weight rider on his back at 3 or maybe 3 1/2 depending on his back then.

But I'm not an expert so if you want take the risk and give problems to your poor horse go ahead, and have happy riding on a lame horse.

The Greek cities of Asia Minor, part of the Persian Empire, revolted in 499 BCE. This was put down by 494 BCE, however the mainland Greece cities of Eretria and Athens had supported the revolt so the Persian king Darius, decided to punish the two cities as a warning to the other Mainland cities of Greece to stay out of his territory in Asia, and sent an expeditionary force to capture them and appoint local tyrants to continue to keep them under control. When this was turned back at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, he decided to bring all the Greek cities under control, leading to the failed invasion by his son Xerxes 480-479 BCE.

After this defeat, Sparta, which had led resistance, wanted to evacuate the Asian Greek cities back to Mainland Greece. Athens wanted to drive the Persians back in Asia Minor and led a consortium of 180 cities (Delian League) in spasmodic warfare over the the next 30 years, until the Persians gave up in 449 BCE, and left the Greek cities to go back to their usual fighting each other.

Interestingly, the Spartan solution was adopted over 2,000 years later after World War 1, when the large Greek population of Asia Minor, under Turkish rule, was evacuated back to Greece in 1922 after the Greek forces were defeated.
