Is it ok to tell my doctor that I took a neighbor's alprazolam for my depression and it helped or will he or she just think I'm pill hunting how should i go about it?

Alprazolam is not generally used for depression. However, it is always best to be honest with your doctor. This way he/she can accurately access your symptoms and prescibe medications accordingly. If you took this medication and you really do have depression, just tell the doctor that. Especially if you felt that it helped. Alprazolam can be addictive though, if taken incorrectly, it is for short-term use. Maybe you can get a prescription for something more suitable for your symptoms. You may even want to see a psychiatrist, a doctor who specializes in these types of issues.

How does one cope with a spouse who is mentally ill who has been diagnosed with Depression Anxiety and OCD?

When a relationship is built it was near one who knows the other very well. Depression Anxiety and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) never occur overnight nor do they suddenly reach such a stage where the brain stops thinking by itself. When GOD created human beings, I mean when the first seed of human embryo starts growing, its the brain that starts developing first and later on other parts start developing. For the person who suffers from Depression Anxiety, its very important to know them, try to understand what situation or tension he or she is experiencing. Maybe such a person might have gone through such situations or accidents which has led him/her to become ill with depression. Try to understand the person and the ways that can be found to help with love, support and gentleness.

AnswerAn important thing to know is the reasons behind why these conditions develop. Research as much as you can about the low levels of brain chemicals and other factors that cause them. That will help to create a situation where you are looking at the behavior caused by the depression as being a third party that you both can deal with, rather directing animosity toward your spouse. They are in no condition to deal objectively with conflict or even small stresses that wouldn't bother them if well. All of this is easier said than done! Don't feel a failure if you find it impossible not to react or despair. Create support networks for yourself, either with understanding friends or one of the support groups for people in just the same situation. It helps so much just knowing you are not alone. Be assured that the medications usually have wonderful success now, although this can take time to work, depending on how much the chemical levels have to be built up. Protect your spouse -and yourself too- from situations that are stressful, and that includes the rellies and friends who think it's just a matter of 'pulling yourself together'.

Are suicide and self-harming OK?

Both suicide and self-harming are ways that people deal with anxiety and depression. They are not healthy ways of dealing. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Speaking as someone who has been at the point of trying it, I can assure you that you will look back and wonder why you were so upset, if only you hang on and don't kill yourself. The best way to deal with this sort of severe depression and hopelessness is to get professional help. Therapy can work wonders with depression and anxiety. You might also need antidepressant medication - it is not habit-forming and most of the newer medicines have fewer side effects. Self-harming seems to be a way to control anxiety. It makes you feel as if you are dealing with the problem. The truth is, you are just switching one anxiety for another. You quickly become addicted to harming yourself, and if you get into a situation where you cannot do it, you get hysterical. Self-harming does not work. Self-harming is related to eating disorders like anorexia and bulemia. It is an unhealthy response. Therapy will help you to change those unhealthy responses and learn healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety.

Why does the government not pay for PTSD in returning soldiers?

The government will not pay as long as the issue is not forced. You have to be the squeaky wheel that makes the noise and not go away because you are told no at first or the second or third time. Makes some noise, write some letters and most of all don't give up and just go away.

How would you communicate the implementation of performance measurements so as not to panic a staff?

First, do not call it "performance measurements". At a nationally recognized hospital system I worked for, we implemented a Total Quality Management program referred to as "TQM". The program was implemented and monitored by the Internal Audit department. In a nut shell each department was audited. The objective of the audits was to identify areas for improvement and to ensure compliance with various regulations and standards. Problems or deficiencies were referred to as opportunities. Very specific and detailed processes were outlined and put into a flow chart. With key personnel from each department included in the process, the flow charted processes were then analyzed to identify any "opportunities" and a plan to address the "opportunities" was put in place by each department. Monitoring of implementation was done by the Internal Audit Department.

What can you do if you're too nervous to stand up for yourself?

If you never stand up for yourself, you are training to be a victim all your life. There are some systems of reality based self-defense that teach some relatively simple to do defensive and offensive moves that can be devastating to an attacker. If you know these moves well enough to use in a bad situation, it is a boost to your confidence, and you may even have the nerve to be assertive when necessary.

If you decide on learning a fighting system, consider learning one that utilizes dirty fighting tactics that are easy to do and does not take years of learning fancy fine motor skill moves to use. But, if you have no choice but to fight, use no more force than necessary to neutralize your opponent.

Does anyone have experience using 5-HTP for anxiety?

Warning: Before taking 5-HTP please be aware that taking 5-HTP may have side-effects. (You can google '5-HTP side effects' for more information). In my experience 5-HTP can help serotonin deficiency but there are some serious side effects to consider if you are not serotonin deficient. Using 5-HTP on a long term basis, when not serotonin deficient, may lead to serious illness or eventually death, according to information available on the internet. Answer If 5-HTP is taken orally, it breaks down before it get to your brain. Answer Vitamin B-6 within your liver has been identified as the compound which breaks down 5-HTP before it crosses the blood-brain barrier. A diet low in B-6 intake might aid in allowing more 5-HTP to reach the brain. Answer If you are referring to the use of 5-HTP to recover from anxiety, in relation to a comedown that is experienced for 3 days after taking MDMA or MDA or ecstasy... In my, and many of my friends' experiences, the absolute best way to recover from a comedown is to know that for days afterwards you are going to feel emotional, and that your anxiety levels will most likely be higher than ever, and be prepared; Be prepared before and after by: taking your vitamins; limiting your water intake to no more than 250ml an hour of water if you are idle, or 400ml an hour if you are active; stay hydrated with sports drinks but STAY AWAY FROM energy drinks and be healthy... For the most part you cant do any thing about it... that's why i say be prepared and it will go away in no more than a week. Good luck... hope i wasn't off base.. and if i was i hope i helped someone! Answer I have tried 5-HTP for depression and anxiety. It might have had a very mild uplifting effect for my mood but it was so mild that it was hardly noticable. It wasn't enough to make me want to carry on taking it. But... I didn't take it for very long, and maybe it would be more effective if taken everyday for 2 weeks or more; Maybe its effects would build up over a few weeks like anti-depressants do. I wouldn't advise anyone to take any single amino acid or protein over a long period of time because that could cause the body to be become imbalanced... If one amino acid is taken in excess, then all the other proteins and amino acids are not processed in a balanced way, so caution is advised. If you do try it out, be sure to take it with plenty of water because if it sits in your stomach it can stimulate your stomach muscles to contract and induce vomiting!

What in the body inhibits fear for certain things and when does it cross the line into a phobia?

It's complicated. Part of the brain can cause fear, the adrenal gland (a rush that doesn't stop like in a normal person) and some medications. Phobias are usually fear of crowded places, flying, heights, repetitive behavior (like closing and opening the door twice before your leave your home or car.) Some people are terrified of spiders (I am) rodents, snakes, etc. Some of these are common fears and I do believe sometimes we can be thrown back into primal instincts of survival modes. Fear of spiders or bugs of any sort is no big deal, but conquering flying if you know you have to fly is a must and there are therapists that can help. Fear of heights (unless you are in a job where you are required to work from heights) is another thing that isn't all that big a deal. Anything that controls your life and takes the quality away IS a big deal. Cognitive Behavior Therapy by a therapist are great tools to help you cope with anxiety, stress, Agoraphobia, out-bursts of anger, anti-social behavior or the lack of confidence.
