What year 5 series and which engine? Prices vary depending on where you live too. Newer BMWs specify synthetic oil. Diesel models use slightly different oil.

US BMW dealer prices are about $130 to $140

UK BMW dealer prices range from about £139 to £179.

Independent mechanics charge slightly less.

An oil change for an M5 would be far more expensive because they require very special oil.

On BMW E39, which ranges from 1997 to 2003, it is behind the trunk covering on the left side, right behind the CD changer.

The same thing happened to me mate, After removing the seat from the car and doing various tests I had a fault with one side of the seat. The bad news is the closest I could get to a full diagnosis was a fault in the gearing or the cable that runs from the motor to the gearing. I was told that you could not replace individual components, so i would have to purchase the motor/cables and gearing and the only supplier of the complete unit was BMW dealerships (costly). If your seat is still knackered I sugest that you look into picking a whole seat up from a breakers.

Bridges Breakers quoted me £40 quid and that was for a leather seat.

I just changed my glow plugs in the same car. It's a 97, though, so it may be a little different.

1) Remove the piece of plastic that covers part of intake manifold

2) Remove the intake manifold taking note of of the small hoses underneath

the manifold and disconnecting the large intake air duct at the front.

3) Remove the electric wire on the top of the plug. Try not to loose the nuts.

4) Remove the glowplug itself

5) Insert new glowplug

6) Attach electrics

7) Move to the next plug

It wasn't to hard to accomplish. I changed all 6 plugs in about 2 hours once i figured out I had to remove the intake manifold.

I think it has somthing to do with the battery being low or dead. This happened to my friend Karlton and now we dont know if it means low battery or if the german's are just laughing at us because it sounds like taco. What the hell is code tacho?

when you turn the key in the passenger door lift the handle at the same time turn the key fully to left on a right hand drive beamer you should now be able to get in.

I have a 525i and I was told by a BMW tech that even if you do not have power to open the doors you can manually use the key on the passenger side door by turning it pas the normal area it will unlock that door. I have read that the early E34 series cars have issues with the mechanisms in the doors that unlock the doors. Does this happen to all doors or just some of them?

The 02 standard seats have the headrest movement linked to the forward/reverse movement of the seat. I was not going to buy the car because of this ill-conceived "feature". It assumes if the seat is moved back the passenger is a tall person and adjusts the headrest up accordingly. Move it forward and it lowers for a smaller person. There IS an undocumented defeat switch of some sort under the seat that only one person in the service dept at my dealer knew was there and how to operate it. What ever he did (it took 3 minutes) the headrest no longer moves with the seat. You can manually move it up and down however. If your service person can't figure it out tell him to contact BMWNA.

The brake lights on a 2001 BMW 525i are replaced by removing the retaining screws, pulling the light assembly from the vehicle, and disconnecting the bulb. A new bulb is then put in place and reassembled.

Under the engine cover:

* Remove the 4 caps that cover the bolts on the engine covers.

* Remove first the cover over the intake manifold (2x 10mm bolts)

* Remove the oil filler cap

* Remove the main engine cover (2x 10mm bolts)

* Replace the oil filler cap (so you don't drop anything in there)

* You should now see the 6 ignition coils, make a note of the ground strap locations (should be 1 in the front and 1 in the back). Remove the cables first by lifting up the metal clips and then pulling away the cable.

* Remove the 12 bolts holding the 6 coils in place. The coils will lift out of place.

* Now would be a good time to check for oil. If you see oil where the spark plugs go it's time to change your valve cover gasket.

* Replace spark plugs. Torque spec is based on spark plug thread (one is for M cars one is for non-M cars, I am too lazy to look it up, here are both:

- Spark plugs with thread M12 x 1.25 = 23 Nm

- Spark plugs with thread M14 x 1.25 = 30 Nm

I believe the M14 plugs (larger) are for the M-cars but don't quote me on that. You should be able to find that by the spark plug specs,

These instructions are valid for M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US engines, basically any BMW inline-6 engine from 1991 - 2005.

Driver's side of the block

The filter is behind the glove box. The box can be opened and slid to the right, then the top frame clip is removed. The wiring harness needs to be unplugged then the air filter box can be reached.

If you have replaced the pads and sensors(right front, left rear) put the ignition key to position 1 and wait until the brake warning dummy light goes off. If it stays on you probably have a faulty sensor. Take the old sensor plug it back on and short circuit the two exposed tiny 2-3mm metal pads using a flathead screwdriver or whatever metallic. Turn the ignition key to position 1 and wait until the light goes off. If it does then the replacement sensor is bad, if it doesn't go off, the warning light panel is bad. The sensor is just a closed loop of wire. When the brake pad is worn enough, it scrapes the plastic off the sensor until it erodes the wire causing an open circuit, triggering off the light.

BMW 3 and 5 series equiped with the ZF 5HP19 are known for the "noreverse" problem. This occurs with the D Clutch Drum fails - cracks or breaks. If this is your problem I suggest checking out www.noreverse.org where you will find considerable information on the subject. NOTE - BMW dealer wanted over $5 to replace the transmission with a BMW rebuilt but I was able to locate a reputable transmission repair shop who rebuilt the transmission and replace the D Clutch Drum with the upgraded part for $3K.
