Will a diff from a 95 BMW 318 fit a 95 BMW 320?

Some 318's come in a Ti version (truncated), its a smaller hatchback version of the E36, in that particular year aswell began production. Those diffs I believe run a slightly different ratio and thus it wouldn't fit a 320. However, if its just a standard E36 body style, saloon, sedan, coupe etc. It should fit, although some tweaks change between the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder BMW's. Most BMW's of the 90's all had interchangable parts except where it came to 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder engine components. But chassis-wise they all run the same stuff.

What do all the numbers and letters mean on the back of the 5 series?

First number - Series (in this case, 5). I am going to assume you mean e39 here. Second & third number - size of engine (i.e. 525i = 2.5L, 530i = 3.0L, 540i = 4.0/4.4L) Letters - i = injected, L = luxury (usually long wheel base), d = diesel.

Why do I have wind noise in the dash area of my 1997 BMW 530 sounds like defrost blower once you get to 30 mph?

Look for loose plastic trim around the exterior edge of you windshield. For years, I would get a wind rattle at 50 mph whenever I was next to a big rig. The noise came straight through the center vent. Something about the physics of aerodynamics would lift the plastic trim at the base of the windshield. After a 50 cent plastic rivet, the wind rattle was gone. Another thing to check are the rubber jack points under the sills. if one or more of these are missing the wind will enter the body at this point and appear as wind noise at the windscreen. I had this problem and confirmed this by using tape to cover over the hole and went for a spin down the motorway. that's the cheap fix, the rubber mounts from BMW were a bit too expensive for me.

Where do look for a brake light problem if both fuses are OK and the lights all went out at once?

Lights Don't Work

Without doing a "hands on" troubleshooting of your vehicle, no one can tell you what defect is causing your problem. Therefore this answer will of necessity be of a generic nature.

Usually this type of problem is caused by what is called an "open circuit" condition.

Open circuits can be caused by several things, a few of which I can recall now:

  • A disconnected connector [or splice] in the circuit.
  • Corrosion or road film buildup on the contacts inside a connector.
  • Corrosion in the metal "socket" the lamp [light bulb] is inserted into.
  • A cut or broken wire in the circuit including the ground wire between the lamp socket and the grounded car body sheet metal.

In your case since all lights were lost at once, it suggests that the first and last items in the list above are the most likely cause of the failure.

The "proper fix" is for someone who knows what he or she is doing to troubleshoot the nonfunctional circuit, find and identify the problem, and properly repair it.

What would cause the power seat adjuster on a 2001 Park Avenue to move the seat backward and forward but not up and down?

There is a transmission under the seat and the solonoids may be bad or the cables broken.

I was told by the Buick dealer if it is the cable it's about $600 to fix as the entire seat platform has to be replaced. Mine broke on both seats on my 2000 Park Avenue. The front adjuster on the driver side and the rear adjuster on the passenger side.

How do you remove accumulator cover from transmission 4L30E?

Simple, push the piston in slightly (there is a special tool available, borrow from the dealer?), remove the circlip, then start the vehicle. Put the vhicle in gear with the brakes applied and rev the motor slightly. The resistance against the brakes (if the vehicle is off the ground..) will cause the line pressure to build and pop the accumulator cover out. This is a messy one-person, no special-tool, kind of operation.. but it works 90% of the time. If the cover remains intact, you are left with either borrowing the tool or prying it out. If you attempt to pry it out, make triple sure you do not scratch the accumulator bore or no amount of new accumulator seals and four letter expletives will fix your leak!
