How do you reset the brake pad warning after changing the brake pads on a BMW?

Just turn the key to on (second) position - where you see all the lights come on the dashboard and wait till the brake wear indicator light go off.

If you replaced the tripped brake wear sensor, the light will go off in about 10-15 seconds...

How do you reset the oil service light manually on a 1994 325i BMW?

I am not responsible if you cause damage to your Answers.com.

Unscrew the Answers.com port cap. (Located on the right side of the engine bay or left side as you stand in front of the car, round cap next to the right strut tower: see photo location below)

Once you have it opened you will see a big Pac-Man shaped hole and twenty little round holes. What is a Pac-Man? Never mind. We are only concerned with pin 7 and pin 19 (note: the words "pin" and "hole" are used interchangeably in this text). Refer to the picture below to find pins 7 and 19.

What we will be doing in this exercise is connecting pins 7 and 19 with a paperclip for four seconds. This will reset the Answers.com service light. Simple, no? But first, here is the list of pins and what they are supposed to do:

Pin Terminal Description

1 TD TD Signal

2 - Not occupied

3 - Not occupied

4 - Not occupied

5 - Not occupied

6 - Not occupied

7 SI Service Interval Reset

8 - Not occupied

9 - Not occupied

10 - Not occupied

11 - Not occupied

12 61 (D+) Generator Charge Indicator

13 - Not occupied

14 30 Voltage; Hot At All Times

15 RXD Diagnostic Data Link

16 15S Voltage; Ignition Switch in Run

17 - Not occupied

18 PGSP Programming Line

19 31 Ground

20 TXD Diagnostic Data Link

OK, now you're ready to reset the oil service light, so turn the ignition key to position II, but don't start the Answers.com. Get out of the car and go to the data port. Always connect pin 7 first. Once you've inserted one end into pin 7, insert the other end into pin 19 and hold it there for 4 seconds. Then remove the paperclip. Check the dash and the oil inspection lights should be reset. The reset occurs upon removal of the clip.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT HOLD IT THERE FOR LONGER THAN 10 SECONDS or you may inadvertently reset your inspection I/II interval.

I am not responsible for this write up, I found it on the web. It took me twice to get it to reset but the first time I did not touch the sides of the port holes with the paperclip. Make sure there is contact with the inside of the ports.

Again, Do Not leave it there for more than 10 seconds.

What type of oil goes into a 2001 Volkswagen Passat?

By weather he or she means that the thicker oil holds up better under high temperature (which it does), increases oil pressure and reduces oil consumption in high mileage engines. But straight 30W and 40W oils are too thick for cold weather and may make an engine hard to start. They may also be too thick to provide adequate start-up lubrication to critical upper valvetrain components during cold weather. So switching to a straight 20W oil would be necessary for cold weather driving. Straight 10W oil can also improve cold starting, but is very thin and should only be used in sub-zero climates. A multiviscosity 10W-30 or 10W-40 will provide the same cold starting benefits of a 10W oil and the high temperature protection of a 30W or 40W oil. 5w-20 or 5w-30 depending on the weather environment

Where can I buy comprehensive auto scanner good for BMW 530 and Volvo S 80 that can read car computer info not only engeen info?

You can buy a OBD2 compliant scanner online from a company called Innova. These scanners are capable of reading all car codes on every vehicle sold in the US after, I believe, 1998. The model is Equus 3030. It worked fine on my Volvo S80. I was able to read the problem codes and reset the check engine light.

Does Slick 50 increase the life of an engine?

I think it will. but most important is to alway change your oil on time

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1996/07/slick.shtm I don't know about all the FTC Charges, but what I do know is that I purchased a 1998 Chevrolet K1500 brand spanking new, changed the oil and filter every 3000-4000 miles and added SLICK 50 at 35000 miles and every 50000 miles thereafter. I now have 309000 miles on my truck and it is still going strong. I have never had any major engine trouble. Would recommend SLICK 50 to everyone that wants their vehicles engine to last. I don't believe all the hype that you see on the Internet about the "FTC charges". It's probably people in the automotive manufacturing business that does not want our engines to last 300000 plus miles so that they can sell more vehicles!

How do you reset the rear brake service light on a 2004 BMW 545i?

You can not simply reset the light, you have to actually replace the brake sensor wire that connects to the rear brakes. This is a sensor that is worn through, when the brakes get low, the sensor rubs the rotor and breaks the connection, turning on the light. You need to get a new sensor from a dealer and replace the brakes and sensor together to get the light off. After replacing the wire as stated do the following to reset the light and mileage countdown timer. To enter this mode, with ignition on, hold the odo reset button (located on the left side of the instrument panel under the tach) for about 10 seconds. The center of the info display will change to "service". It will have an icon for which service feature and the miles/date left until service is required. These icons are the same as displayed on the I-drive service screen. So, you can go through the Idrive service screen to get familiar with the icons prior to doing this. Once in this mode, push the reset button to cycle through the various service items. To reset a service item that is displayed, hold the reset button. I don't remember how long, but the display will change to a reset mode. You must release the button once it enters this reset mode. Then you will need to confirm the reset by pressing the reset button again. The reset service interval will then be changed. You can continue pressing the reset button to scroll through the other icons. I think to exit, I simply shut off the ignition. As with the previous post, be careful not to reset something you did not intend to. It is kind of hard to do this as you enter the reset function, then you must confirm it. If this is not clear, let me know. It may sound difficult, but is actually pretty easy. "Firstly with the ignition switched on, set the odometer trip meter back to zero by pushing it once. Then switch the ignition back off again. (I found this step was critical, otherwise I couldn't get to the "Service" menu). Now you are ready to go through the reset steps as follows: 1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car. 2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon. 3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu). 4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window. 5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on. 6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear. 7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above). Hints & Tips Before actually resetting anything, go through steps 1, 2 and 6 above until you are familiar (and sure) what you want to reset. Practice this a few times and note down in what order the icons appear after the initial "Service" icon appears. If you do happen to hold the button down too long against an item you don't want to reset and the "RESET?" appears, just leave the button alone for 10 seconds or so and it will not let you reset the item. (Alternatively just switch the ignition off and start again). Sometimes if you have not released and pressed the button again quickly enough, when you hold it down again the German technical writing will appear after about 15 - 20 seconds instead of the Service item icon you were expecting. (If this happens just switch off the ignition and start again). Once you are sure what item you want to reset and are confident of the sequence, then give it a go. If you do hesitate between releasing and pressing the button at any time, you will have to go back to the beginning and start again as "he who hesitates is lost"."
