This is how a grenade works. They are very simple and easy to understand.
1) First when you pull the pin you hold the handle. This delays the pin from striking the percussion cap. (you can hold it for as long as you want and it wont go off).
2) When you let go of the lever the pin strikes the percussion cap.
3) That sets off the chemical time delay.
4) It then hits the detonator which sets off the explosives.

Yes, grenades can explode. This is their nature. To do so, however, they typically require the detonator to be installed, and the "spoon" to be "charged." To accomplish this, one must pull the pin.
You've likely seen it done in movies. The Sgt. Rock character, one foot high on the front lip of the trench, takes the ring of the pin in his teeth, holds the grenade high, releases the handle (charges the spoon) with a delicate chime, and throws the grenade at the enemy.
It is pretty much the same in real life, with the exception of standing out of cover, and the whole pulling the pin with your teeth thing. And, once the spoon has been charged, you have about three seconds to get rid of it.
