What was the price of a loaf of bread in 2009?
In Prattville, Alabama, I bought a Winn Dixie brand loaf of plain white thin-sliced bread for ninety-nine cents ($.99). That month, I also bought a loaf of Sara Lee blueberry bread (sliced-small) for about $3.75 and Pepperidge Farm cinnamon-raisin bread (sliced-small) for about $3.25 at the WalMart Superstore. The price of a loaf of bread here can be as low or as high as you want. We have different stores with prices that vary, and we have different loaves with prices that vary. If I went to the Winn Dixie store for that same loaf of Sara Lee blueberry bread, I would probably pay about $4.75 for it. If I went to the "Day Old" bread store for the same loaf, I may be able to get it for about $2 or $3, maybe less if they are about to throw it out. The price of bread is as variable as the price of fruit and vegetables! It depends on where you are, where the bread was made, the local cost of living and job market, etc. Take your pick! $1.29

What does maizena do in baking shortbread?
Maizena (cornflour) enhances the crumblyness of shortbread - since it is gluten free, it mixes in with wheatflour and disrupts the gluten bonds which would otherwise form.
However, many (if not most) shortbread recipes do not require the use of maizena. It's a modern addition which makes the baking of shortbread easier, since it covers up mistakes caused by overworking the dough.

Why does my Amish friendship bread fall in the middle during baking?
If different recipes or types of cakes all fall in the center, I assume they are not done. Do you check with a toothpick before removing them? Most ovens are a little off when it comes to temperature and the time suggested for baking is an estimate. Try increasing the temperature a few degrees, or leaving it in maybe 5 minutes longer.
