What does Tatonka mean?

Spelled like that it means nothing; as tatanka (with a nasalised second a) it is the Lakota term literally meaning "big hump", used for the male of any large animal species with its head carried below the line of its spine - bears, moose, goats, elk, buffalo. It is made up of ta (an animal with a humped appearance) and tanka (large).

Many uninformed people today claim that it means simply "buffalo bull", but this is a false claim.

The similar term tabloka also has the meaning "male of an animal species with a hump".

What organ of a buffalo did Plains Indians use to make an arrowhead?

Some Plains arrow points were made of antelope, elk or buffalo bone (not from animal organs), attached with sinew taken from a buffalo's legs or spine. Bone points do not survive as well as those of metal or stone so there are only a few in museums today.

As soon as white traders arrived, natives quickly obtained ready-made metal points as well as thin sheet metal and tools for making their own. Stone and bone points became obsolete at that instant.

Jim Hamm in his book "Bows and Arrows of the Native Americans" states that he has seen bone points made by Kiowas on the southern Plains, plus a few from the northern Plains, but they are today quite rare. His experiments show that antelope leg bones make sharper bone points than either buffalo or deer - heating the point allows it to take a sharper edge as well as hardening it.

Bison sacred to the North American Tribes?

They were not "Sacred" in the same way that you use the term (general christian type definition) as in the "Bible is Sacred" etc. Bison were honored and respected as a 'gift' from the great spirit to nourish his red children, but they were not sacred. The use of terms between these religions can cause confusion.

What were buffalo robes used for?

Among the Plains and marginally-Plains tribes buffalo robes served many functions.

They were used as bedding - both for a kind of mattress and as coverings. They provided the only warm outer garment in cool weather, because no coats or other outer clothing was worn. They were often decorated in specific ways to indicate the sex of the wearer and sometimes display a warrior's war record.

Paint was often applied in incised lines on the inner surface of a robe, while the hair was left intact on the outer surface, which was worn next to the body. Among some tribes a woman's robe would bear a rectangular geometric design known today as "box and border"; a man's robe might feature a circular radiating design similar to a war bonnet, or images and symbols of warfare, horse raids and wounds received.

A Blackfoot oman's robe collected in 1833 is tanned almost white and has a painted pattern of seven narrow, parallel bands of geometric designs in yellow ochre, green, red and black. This robe is now in the German Museum of Leather in Offenbach.
