How many calories does one hour of Tae Kwon Do burn?
I think around 500, roughly the same as that as downhill skiing. So, three hours of practice you burn around 1500. With 8 hours, naturally around 4,000. ........ Okay, so maybe it is possible to drop 4 inches off one's waistline in only 10 days doing nothing but Tai Chi. However Tai Chi Chuan is more than simply "exercise;" there are people who have been known to drop their body fat percentage down to a whopping 7% only only an hour a day, burning roughly 1,000 calories per day. See, weight loss is not about caloric intake, it just isn't, at least not entirely. Think for example, about people aged between 18 and 22, the way they stuff themselves, how careless they tend to be with their bodies and yet how they never gain an ounce. Or how some people, like, say, Scarlett Johansson, are bitterly hated by the likes of Natalie Portman because even though Johansson can down an entire extra large, entirely cheese pizza, she still maintains her figure. Whereas poor Portman is on a virtual starvation diet. She must hate Johansson SO MUCH. lol. Anyway getting off the tangent; the other day, while pondering these things I had an epiphany. Metabolism is not about rate, its about efficiency. Think for a minute; there are people out there, who the maximum amount of working out they do, is 2 hours a day, 6 days per week, often on a plan of 6 small meals per day. The total amount of calories they burn in a given day, is only roughly around 1500, however, from supplementation, they may consume as much as 4,000 calories. Now when the muscles are torn down from weight training, you are constantly burning calories its true, but not nearly enough to make you lose weight in other words, there is something else going on besides simply the speed of your metabolism that is when it hit me; its not about speed, its about efficiency, and efficiency, is determined by the body's overall elasticity, and ability to metabolize protein, and that, is determined by the health of the nervous system. If your nervous system gets shot to hell, your body will get shot to hell; think for a minute, why is it that some people are lean and fit on only 30 minutes of Yoga a day? Yoga, stretches the spinal nerve, which wires the entire body. Also for reasons not yet understood by medical science, the practice of Tai Chi Chuan, helps to maintain the pliability of every single tissue in the body meaning, the reason some people drop their body fat percentage down to 7% if they are men, 15% to 20% if they are women in other words, what is proper for each gender, may have to do with the pliability restoring effects of Tai Chi Chuan because see, when the body's flexibility goes, everything else follows, and Yoga is limited in that it only stretches the joints and muscles, but in the end that is like working hard to make a dry twig flexible. With enough hard work and patience, even a dry twig can be made flexible again, if you go slow enough (REALLY slow....). Using that analogy, its the same with Yoga; some people middle aged and older may see limited results, because without proper chi circulation, the amount of pliability they will restore will be limited only to the joints, and very little on the muscles. Pliability, complete and total body tissue flexibility, according to Chinese medicine, is lost because as a person grows older, and usually because of gathered mental problems, the chi lines of the body become blocked and clogged. As these chi lines, these meridians and "veins" of energy get blocked, and there is chi energy blockage, the body becomes gradually less and less flexible. The vigor of the chi lines is determined largely by whether or not a person has had a good home life, loving but strict parents, and a lifetime of exercise. In other words you do not need mystical Daoist practices to maintain proper chi flow, because ultimately it all "begins in the mind." That is why some people are healthy, despite getting only 3 days of workout time per week, while some people may struggle fanatically for up to 4 hours and still have a slight belly bulge after years of working out, even the ones who "do everything right," that is, eat six meals, get their beauty rest, etc. The role of the mind can not be overlooked, is what Chinese doctors often warn or advice. Stop counting calories; naturally don't abuse your body by binging, drinking, and, say, eatgin Kahlua Cream pie (good stuff!) for your three meals of the day. Everyone says that the reason most teenagers are lanky, lean, and thin, is because their bodies are growing, everything is brand new and the whole hormone flow thing. However that fails to explain the number of morbidly obese teenagers; clearly, there is something else going on there besides "metabolic speed." When the chi lines are unclogged, and all the chi meridians are properly "lit up" for lack of a better term, a person enjoys "glorious good health." Tai Chi won't give you big muscles, however, it will give your body the proportions its supposed to have, what is proper for your gender, as you were at the absolute peak of your life. If a man practices Tai Chi Chuan for instance, he will be as lean as he was when he was 18 (and just as virile), but, with the muscular "fullness" of a 30 year old if he's over 30. Oh yeah "fullness;" you will be careful to observe, there is a difference between an 18 year old boy, and a 30 year old man. In strength training and bodybuilding circles, even though medical science has apparently not caught up with what they have known for years, it is well known that a man's full muscular maturity is not reached until he is 30. In the Arab world, this has been known for years in fact, the age of 30 is called "the flower of manhood." It is when men are at their manliest, their most handsome, and physically strongest, and all told from dudes who got there, I've been told that if I keep in shape I'll enjoy the age of 30, and not to loathe it. Getting off the tangent though; the process of going from thin but spry and chiseled 18 year old, to a "filled out" 30 year old, is the process of changing from boy to man. Of course its different from male to male; some men get full muscular maturity right at 21, while others, have to wait for their late 20's. Whether you lift weights or not, regardless of your build, muscular maturity is part of being a man; you will do well to observe, that professional athletes often give their most spectacular performances in their 30's, but the moment they hit 40, that is when the steady decline begins. What Tai Chi promises for a man, is this; you keep the virility of your 18 year old self, the "filled out" and "finally a grown man" look from when you were 30 assuming you're there, in addition to the leanness of when you were 18. Plus, if you become a master, you get to look 30, minor changes in hair color along the way, for the rest of your life, unto your death bed. Women get to hold on to their beauty clear until the age of 60, plus, it alleviates the effects of menopause significantly. Also, please ignore those people who say chi will give you insomnia; sometimes I do Tai Chi to help me fall asleep. There is more to it than just calorie counting; once your chi lines are balanced, you may get to hold on to your youth for the rest of your life, however there are no guarantees as with all things in life, moreover, even though Tai Chi Chuan makes you resilient, it does not make you indestructible, so you still have to take care of your body. Only revered Daoist immortals for example, can down an entire gallon of Liquor and not die of alchohol poisoning, or cirrhosis of the liver the way Cheng Mang Ching did. Cheng Mang Ching is credited with introducing Tai Chi to the west; because Tai Chi does indeed have the power to make the body resilient, the man got careles and he abused his body. Cheng Mang Ching, was a prodigious drinker in fact, from students he initially rejected, he would often teach them Tai Chi if they bribed him with expensive wine. He was known to have consumed enough liquor that would kill normal men; that is how strong his chi was. I have heard similar stories, about former Shaolin monks who, just because chi has made their body stronger, more resilient, they use that as an excuse to stuff themselves, or consume heroic quantities of liquor knowing it won't kill them. Perhaps they may have greater resistance than normal human beings, or rather human beings who do not practice chi circulation, but just because they have a stronger flow of chi, that does not make them invincible. Cheng Mang Ching, legend says, consumed roughly 9 galons of liquor per day. At every Tai Chi practice, he was always seen with a bottle of wine. In other words Tai Chi Chuan won't help you, if you don't help yourself; if you follow the health advice as best you can from fitness experts, and combine Tai Chi with weight training you'll likely work a "praise Jesus!" type miracle as they say in the west. However if you abuse your body, Tai Chi won't ensure that you can never damage your body, all Tai Chi will do is make sure you damage it more slowly, but you still damage it nevertheless. I know Tai Chi can make you feel powerful, on top of the world, yet humbled, manly, yet without being cold hearted or harsh, intelligent, yet aware of your limits, and that a single 20 minute repetition, by the end, you feel calm, at peace, like everything is going to be alright and that all the cares of the world just fall away, and that the world itself no longer seems to matter, and the feeling is so strong, you feel as if that is all the practice you will ever need but here is a word of warning; even though a single 20 minute repetition feels great, it isn't enough. The legendary founder Shang Sang Feng, and this was echoed by master Yang Lu Chan, both warned "good, but its not enough." In internal martial arts circles, you will hear those words a lot "good, but not enough." They will keep repeating that, until you finally realize that its never enough; the purpose fo that is not to destroy your hope of improving, but rather get you to understand that even though chi is wonderful healing stuff its no excuse to abuse your body. "Only the immortals" they warn "are invincible," during your training, although your chi is finally flowing, and you get a "taste of the mystical" as some Daoists write, you are still a limited, weak, vulnerable, and finite human being all the same. Sorry for being so overblown but, I think that sumarizes everything I've read about Tai Chi Chuan. good luck.

What happens when you do not eat enough calories?
You will begin to get really bad headaches!
First your body burns all of its stored energy, in other words, your excess fat. Then it begins burning your muscles, and you get weak and lose all muscle tone. The hair on your head loses it's sheen, and gets thinner.
If your body starts burning muscle, remember that your heart is a muscle, and your health is *greatly* at risk. If you don't eat enough calories, you eventually die.
You would lose weight. If it continued, the body would start breaking down stored fat, then protein (meaning the muscles) if this stage of starvation occurred.
