Why are there no rain forests in barbados?

because it is not in the Caribbean chainBarbados is in the Caribbean chain, however it lies 100 miles to the east of the volcanic arc which includes (St. Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica etc.). The reason there are no (substantial) rainforest in Barbados (there are some very small tracts of forests there) is due mainly to the islands topography. Barbados is very flat, only rising to 340m above sea level. The flat rolling terrain was ideal for sugar cane production in the early days after colonisation and so most of the forests were stripped to make way for sugar cane cultivation. Most of the other islands in the eastern Caribbean are comparitively very mountainous, and the steep slopes which were unsuitable for large scale agriculture or housing were left in the natural vegetation, a lot of which remains in tact today.
